I have a 20" flat top upper. Can I simply have the front section cut off? Or do I have to move the gas block closer toward the receiver?

Sorry in advance if this is a FAQ, but I couldnt find any info with the search.

You need a lathe to cut the barrel down.

You will also need to open up the gas port, depending on how much you chop off.

And I've seen good results from a member on these boards that did it for another member.

I'm really warming up to the idea of a cut-down 20" because of that. Makes quite a bit of sense and I bet it'd be pretty light.

Whats the advantage to a cut down 20 as opposed to a regular 16in. barrel?

You get the smoother ops of the rifle length gas system along with the rifle length sight radius, all in a carbine length, mobile package.  If you do it with a gov't profile barrel, you get a very light package, also.

Thanks for the replies so far.  It is an HBAR, so I don't think I will see any weight savings.  What member did it for what member? Are there pictures available?

I did one for BadSVT.  I've also done two for myself.

Thanks.

So basically It can be done, but the gas port on the barrel has to be drilled out to .100

Sweet.

0.100" works for me and the barrels I used.  Some say 0.110" is needed, but I came up on my gas port size in increments and it ran fine at 0.100", so if you started at 0.100", it should work, but a tweak or two may be needed.

I'm sorry what supplier do you use for the barrels to cut down

The EE mostly.  I look for new or low round count gov't profile barrels.  IMHO, if you want a Dissy, it's the only way to go.
