I'm thinking of building an AR that looks as close as possible to the original issued M16A1.

Any parts you'd recommend for this build, please let  me know.

Does Armalite even sell stripped lowers? If not I'd like to get one as plain-jane as possible with few markings on it.

Does anyone make an A1 upper without a forward assist?

I haven't even looked around yet. Just a lazy first post on the subject.

This is the look I want (the top picture on this page)

Check the EE. Billbo has a handful of Colt uppers at any given tim.  Save yourself some $$.

This is really easy....

Lots of early M16 slickside upper out there with no FA and no deflector.  Skinny pencil barrel.  You can often find a complete upper like this on the EE for $200 to $250.  Of course, the M16A1 had forward assist....

Then, get a rock river lower (few markings) or the like.  Only issue is the uppers are colt gray and most newer lowers are black.

A1 stocks.... find in the EE.  Good to go.  You can build a M16/SP1 copy for pretty cheap... I built mine for like $550.  ($250 for complete upper on EE, $150 complete lower, $100 bolt/carrier, $50 for stock/buffer/tube)

Check Sarco they usually have the entire M-16 Upper for cheap, I think Keislers has Colt SP1 kits cheap too. Fulton sells a "Legend" upper.
I got the entire top end of an Ex Air Force M-16 for around 200 even with new bolt and carrier
and I got my A1 Furniture for cheap from CMMG.
I'll post a pic of it later .

Hell, if you buy that DPMS upper, by the time you put sights and ejection port cover on it,, you'll have the better part of $200 into the upper, when you can get a Collt milsurp piece, in top shape, with all the pieces already on it, for somewhere in the $100 range. Think I paid about $90 for mine, at a local gun show. Air Force surplus; 99.9% finish on it.

Take the previous advice and look at the EE section of this site

This is a rifle similar to what you describe. It is based on USAF early M16 upper and parts from the EE and a current RRA lower. The upper/lower color match is a bit off but in my judgement not worth the cost/effort to get a more exact match. Great rifles and can be put together for less than $500.

I'm not saying it's cheap, but.....

Okay, here's an update: been shopping in the EE as recommended here. So far I've got:

Complete furniture: $27
Bolt & carrier: $90
Complete upper: $160

So yeah this will be a sub-$500 gun easy. I'll post pics when I get her together.

I need to dump the A1 FS to get more of a M16 look, which I like better than the M16A1.

Stickman,
Good photo.
If you are "reaching" for that look, you need to change the buttstock to a M16 one. The one you have is an A1. A couple of people on the EE have the M16 stocks for about $10.

Why do you want a slick side upper if you are building an M16A1 clone?

Maybe I've got my terminology wrong. It's just M16 with the slick side?

That is true.

In order to build an accurate M16 replica you'll need a slab-side lower receiver as well.  An SP1 won't work though because it'll have the screw.

What screw?

ETA; what the heck is a slab-side lower receiver? I'm going to use a modern receiver, either RRA or Mega as offered in the EE.

I'm not looking for a freaking museum-quality replica here. Just a shooter that looks like the original M16.

I appreciate the purists but I'm also trying to keep it cheap and easy.

It's either one or the other.

Just go buy a used M16 upper for $180, slap it on a stipped RRA lower for $100, put a $100 bolt in it and a $60 parts kit and go to town.  You've got a complete rifle for $450 +/-.  Just don't call it an M16 replica 'cause it's not.

You're the one that said you wanted one that looked "as close as possible".

Much easier to do an M16A1 like myself.

No brass deflector, forward assist, fenced lower.

www.buffertech.com has M16A1 upper recievers that are AWESOME.

I know the feeling. you and I are just some guys who thought it would be neat to have low cost AR with something of a look of a M16 look and you get comments from some no life losers with thousands of posts telling you what you want or can call it.
This is suposed to be a shared hobby. Get off his ass.

Who shit in your cereal?

We can't infer what the little hamster living in your head told you to do.  All we can do is read a post and try our best to answer it.  It sounds to me like JCKnife didn't know what he was talking about and got a bit pissy (much like yourself) when that fact was pointed out.  I don't think a single response was rude or condecending.

He asked for suggestions and said he wanted an "M16 lookalike".  How are we supposed to know that what he (or you) really wanted was a cheap rifle?

You are correct. I forgot or discounted the level of expertise here at ARFCOM. Thanks, sincerely, to all who set me straight in determining what I REALLY wanted, 'cause it's plain to me now that at first I did not know.

JC I say you go with the $450 option I posted above.  I have a complete barreled upper and a Rock River stripped lower at home which I'll probably make into one at some point.  I'm more or less just cruising around looking for parts.

Do these fit modern receivers?
Link Posted: 9/22/2004 10:30:04 AM EDT
[#25]
Absolutely.

The recievers are the same, but new lowers are deep black, and older AR's are dark grey.

So, if you use a new lower, you'll have to refinish it, or refinish the upper to match the lower.  Or if you don't care, just put em together.

Nope, even USAF M16s (no FA) used serrated carriers for logistical reasons.

Well, the later ones did; but the first ones had slick side, chrome plated carriers, and plated bolt assys. Got a set in my own M16 Air Force Semi clone. "Semi clone" because it's on a current A2 type lower. Still trying to find an early A1 type lower to use. Everything else is original, though

When I was in the Army ('83-'86) my A1 of course had the tear-drop forward assist and no brass deflector.   However I cannot remember whether it had that fence around the magazine release.

Am I understanding right that it would have had that feature?

Thanks

May or may not have had the fence.  The mag release fence was introduced in the middle of the production run. Now there are those on the site who will swear that any reciever marked M16A1 has the fence, because it was introduced when the services officially adopted the M16A1, and that any unfenced lower is marked XM16 or similar. I try not to argue eith these people, because they paid good money for the books that tell them that, and I don't want them to feel bad about having paid that money for books that are only half right.

Here's my M16A0 look-alike.  Only deviation is a current production lower.  It even has a notchless chrome carrier and a solid F.P. retainer.  Light weight, simple, and fun to shoot.

We were converting some old AF M-16's to the A2 configuration, and I took photos of the oldest one the serial number was in the 3000 range, Slab side, Delta shaped charging handle, a funky bolt release and green stocks. I tried to save it but our commander ordered it destroyed. I have pics if anybody can tell me how to post them. It would be a cool project to recreate
