I know little about scopes. I am building two rifles (6.5 Gendel and 308) with good barrels and have two precision ARs. I also have a couple basic 223 ARs with Nikon 3x42 BDC.
I have used some inexpensive scopes 3-9x40 (Tasco) and really need to move up.
I looking at shooting target out to 100yds and 200yds mainly maybe 300yds and need good resolution. I am also interested in using the scopes for hunting if possible at 100 - 200yds.
I found some interesting Vortex scopes and the new Nikon black X1000.
I typically do not use magnification greater than Objective/Magnification less than 7.
I would welcome some guidance as to brands and what to look for.
Thanks.

What is your budget?

Is having a true 1x a priority?

No 1x - I guess 3X min which make the objective > 20mm
I assume I'm in the $350 - $800 range. A bit more if really good.

Lots of good options in that price range.

Might be able to get a Burris xtr 2

SWFA 3-15

Athlon Midas Tac or Ares

I am most excited for the new primary arms 3-18 that is coming soon. Have been reading really good things.  Even the PA 4-14 FFP scopes are good at around $250 if you want a couple for different guns

Not sure what you mean by this - you obviously want a larger target diameter for where it hits your eyeball.  Got that.

But... what level of magnification do you want?  How big a scope?  A 50mm objective can get you up to 7x with a Obj/Mag=>7 a 44mm objective will get you to 6x - but that is at the low end of the magnification range for variables that have those large objectives... and they are all BIG scopes.

Shooting small groups from a bench at 300 yards is different from shooting steel at 300 yards is different from hunting at up to 300 yards.  Depending on your exact needs you may be better served by 2 $400 scopes than 1 $800 scope...

IE for hunting, a Leupold 1.25-4x - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1037990-REG/leupold_113165_vx_r_hog_1_25_4x20_30mm.html
And then for target/bench use one of the 6-24x target/varmint scopes from one of the quality makers like Leupold, Weaver, Burris, etc.

Ivanivan - you are correct. I feared I would need 2 scopes, unless I segregate the rifles. You are right on for the 7x.

If you are going to go deer hunting, make sure you can see if it is the same legal buck that you spotted with your binoculars. In the woods under not so great light use a 1x4 at 300 yards and you can barely see antlers. I recommend for general hunting use a 3x9 premium scope.  I lean to a USA Leupold or Burris with a ballistic type plex. Those scopes are tough, remain fog free, hold zero, have a great guarantee and the price is reasonable. For varmint hunting larger magnification may be needed at longer range. It's hard to make out a groundhogs head at 300 yards. Avoid flip type covers hunting below freezing, very hard to open when frozen shut.

I’d say a Burris Rt6 and a SWFA SS 12x fixed power. Both on quality QD Mounts. Then you can move them around as you see fit. The 1-6 for hunting/closer the 12x for target/Varmit hunting. Both are way better than the price suggests.
