SWFA SS 10x or 16x for .308 at 800 yards?

I have a RRA 308 with a 26 inch barrel that I am looking for a scope for. I like what I hear about the SWFA SS series. Of the 10x, 16x, and 20x, what would be most at home from 200 to 800 yards. This rifle will be on the bench and chasing paper and gongs most of the time. If it is in the field hunting, it will be in a blind or stand. I know there are most likely better scopes for this, and I should most likely go with a variable, but I want to give a decent fixed power a try. If I like the SWFA SS I will put the same thing on a RRA 24inch .223 I have. It's kind of the "minnie me" version of the .308 rifle.

If you have had any experience with this line of scopes, even if it has been on other style rifles, let me know what you think of them.

If you are going to hunt with it, you will probably be happier with a variable. The 10x would be a pretty excessive for hunting, especially if you need a close quick shot. Going down below 10x can help minimize the effects of mirage in those kind of days too.

Out of all the fixed power SWFA scopes, the 10x I think is the best. It's a good all around magnification. The higher magnification (16x and 20x) I read (don't quote me) don't have the clarity as the 10x does. Should you go hunting, even from a blind, 20x and even 16x seems a bit excessive.

I have both and the 16x was way too much at 200 yards, it might be better at 6 - 800.

will any of the variable Super Snipers work with a .50BMG Barrett 82A1's recoil? consistently? in a larue mount

If I were you I'd go with the 10x, that's what I have on my bolt gun and its a great scope for the money. The 16x will be TOO much for hunting, even the 10x isn't the best for hunting situations but its worked for me time and time again.

ETA: I've use my 10x to 600 and it does fine, no real need for more magnification. Unless your hunting groundhogs at that distance.

I just noticed that they have a 6x as well.

Looks like FOv at 100 yards stacks up like this

6x = 13
10 = 13
16x = 6.75
20x = 6.75

I thought that the 6x would be almost twice the FOV as the 10x and the 16x would be about a quarter wider than the 20x, but that is not what is advertised. I have a 4.5x14 power scope on a 300 win mag hunting rifle and if I forget it on 14x, it is easy to "get lost" in the scope until it is zoomed down. FOV at 100 when on 14x is about 7.

The SWFA website is wrong on the 6X. It was measured by an owner at 21. Can't believe they haven't corrected it yet.

I hunt with a SWFA 10x on an FN XP 308. Target acquisition is not a problem.

Same experience, only mine is on an FN PBR.

i've got the 3-9x SS and it's worked good out to 600. hopefully i'll be able to stretch that out a little farther this weekend.

I have a SS 10X on a Remington PSS and the SS 3-9X on SA M1A National Match. I shoot steel and IPSC targets out to 900 yards with them and am happy with my choice. If you can swing the 3-9 I bet you would not regret it. I would not choose the 16X because of mirage. You don't need higher magnification unless you are shooting precision targets or small varmints.

I think I am pretty much set on the 10x for the .223.

I am tempted on the 16x for the .308 though.

Is the 10x enough for repeatable hits at 800 on a torso sized gong. That is the only reason I am leaning on the 16x.

These are both pretty boring bench guns for the most part.

the way i look at it, 9X is only slightly less than the 10x and military snipers have used fixed 10x scopes out to 1000 yds and beyond for years. with the 9x, i'm getting a variable scope that'll do everything i need it to do out to as far, if not farther, than i can shoot it.

Yes, you can quarter the head of a full size IPSC target at 800 yards with 10X.
