i am putting together either a 16'' or 18'' ar for precision. shooting groups at 100-200 yds with the ability to plink and maneuver on the lower magnification settings every once in awhile. but shooting for groups is my main objective. would you suggest a 2.5-10ish optic or 3.5-15ish? is 10x enough? is 15x overkill?

I'd go 3-9 or 2.5-10.At that range you don't need high mag and in fact it may even make small groups harder.

I have no problem shooting to 200 with a 9 power, I would say you would be fine with a 10 power.  It's basically going to boil down to what you are comfortable with.  If you feel the 10 is enough and you are grouping to your expectations then great....if not try a higher magnification.  I would be more cautious about having good glass rather than the magnification.

thanks. that'll save about 300 bucks too. why do you say it would make it harder. my muscle movements being magnified by 15x ? don't know if i said that right.

well my plan was the NF 2.5-10x32 but by the time i'm done building the rifle and saving for the NF i'll be 50 and i'm only 33. expensive stuff but worth it

gotcha. the nightforce is as expensive as i can possibly go. in my spending i'd feel more comfortable with buying the 2.5-10x24. is the 2.5-10x32 really  needed for my application seeing that it is a few hundred dollars more? besides nightforce and leupold who else should i be looking at in this price range?

You might wanna take a look at the new Bushnell 6500 Tactical just coming out. Though I don't know first hand nor have read anything, the Bushy's I do have are SUPER clear and well made. The one I'm referring to is the 2.5-16x50, which is a nice low to high range and should come in about $700 discounted. I am considering mounting one on an SPR build I'm doing....
