Will weaver type rings fit on an A3 upper or do I need a different type of ring to mount a scope?  

I don't have a gun to try this on but I am thinking about getting one and was wondering if I can uses a scope and rings I already have.

Yep, Weaver rings work just fine on a picatinny rail.  Just not the other way around.

If the rings you already have are for a traditional rifle, they may be too short for an AR, which generally needs the scope mounted up around 1.4" centerline.  This usually requires ultra-high rings or a riser that gets the rings to the desired height.
