I have an Aimpont on a carbine, but was thinking of putting one of these Leupolds on a 20 incher for somewhat longer ranges.  My thinking is that it would aid target detection and precision.  I think these scopes run $500 or $600.  The recticle appears to be the same as the CQ/T's, except it is red.  I only anticipate shooting at 400- yards, so no rangefinding hokum is necessary.  Is there a better option out there that is in the same price range?

It's not the same as a CQ/T. The CQ/T has an illuminated amber dot and circle reticle with very basic ranging capabilities. The 1.5-5x has the illuminated SPR reticle, which is an entirely different beast. The CQ/T is faster; the SPR is more precise and is calibrated for both 5.56 and 7.62 (see holdovers).

vmpglenn:

The scope I am looking at actually has a reticle more like the CQ/T than the MR/T.

The dimensions are as follows:

1.5-5 VX3 illum circle dot -  MOA of the circle and dot in the reticule of the above scope at minimum and maximum magnification at 100 yards:

Circle Inside - 112.9" inches at 1.5x and 37.7" inches at 5x Thickness of Circle Line - 1.9" inches at 1.5x and 0.6" inch at 5x Dot -  4.9" inches at 1.5x and 1.6" inches at 5x

I have a MR/T 1.5-5x20 M2 with the SPR reticle on a 20" gun an love it.  If shooting out to 400 yards you will need to use some sort of hold over.

The SPR reticle is quick up close due to the circle / duplex design, but is precise at longer distances 400 to 600 yards.

I don't know if they offer the SPR reticle in the VariX-III.....But they do offer the SPR reticle in the Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm PR ..........The PR line has many of the same feature as the MR/T, but at a cheaper price (it does not come with the M2 cams)

If you look around you can find them cheaper.....You may also want to check with kblagg in the Optics forum on the Equipment Exchange, he carries a large line of Leupold scope and has very good prices!

The Leupold CQ/T is another great scope and it is very strong.

There are a lot of good scopes out there and Leupold is one of the best!  We are an Authorized dealer for Leupold and we will be or beat anyone’s price and if you are LE or Military let us know.

Does the MR/T M2 1.5-5 come with bullet drop compensation cams on the dials, similar to the LR/T?  I would want a cam to match the 55 grain m193.

I am sorry nobody has really answered your question.
You guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but a 1.6" dot on 5x at 100 yards means it will have a 6.4" dot at 400 yards.  The size of the dot and only having 5x at that distance would make me want cross hairs to line up with instead of a dot.  I also believe Leupold doesn't make a scope with a lighted reticle were the illumination works in the daytime if that is a deciding factor.

I did not care for mine much. You could not see the illumination in daylight applications. I am selling mine right now on Ebay. I am going to get the Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4 with the red chevron.
