Ring spacing is also an issue.  Considering the average rear ocular lense housing is 3" long and the flattop is only about 7", the rear rings mounts all most mid receiver.  Does not leave alot of room for the front ring.  You will see some rifle with the continuous rail systems (Troy, Samson) having the front ring mounted on the rail and not the receiver.  There are other scopes out there with short eye relief needed for the AR15, but they do not have adequate ring spacing.  As Wes points out, the MR/T was specifically designed to be mounted directly to the flattop using conventional rings.

Any scope that would work an an M16 flattop rifle will also work on a M4 Carbine (that includes the majority of rifle scopes on the market). When extended, the carbine buttstock is the same length as the rifle (same eye-relief). I highly recommend a MIL-1913 (picatinny rail) compatible scope mount, along with a matching tube diameter scope ( 1", 30mm, etc). Generally, you'll pay a lot more for a 30mm. Brownells and/or Midwayusa have serviceable, low-cost mount options.
