'Radar Scope' Senses Activity Through Walls

January 4, 2006 2:40 a.m. EST

Danielle George - All Headline News Staff Reporter

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Troops conducting urban operations will be able to use "Radar Scope" to detect if someone is in the next room, says Edward Baranoski from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

The portable, handheld device can detect movements as small as breathing through a wall.

The Radar Scope, developed by DARPA, is expected to be fielded to troops in Iraq as soon as this spring.

The Radar Scope will give soldiers the capability to sense through a foot of concrete and 50 feet beyond that into a room, explains Baranoski.

Proposals are also expected this week for the new "Visi Building" technology that will actually "see" through multiple walls, penetrating entire buildings to show floor plans, locations of occupants and placement of materials such as weapons caches, says Baranoski.
