We haven't had any problems with the OKOs being "fragile" at all. The Czech Republik Military and police has been using the OKOs on their Vz58s, MP5s, and Skorpian Submachineguns for roughly 5 years now.
For users concerned with durability we offer several steel covers that go around the OKO.

As for the wire, it is only standard on the military version. The OKO-W models do not have it. I've been using the OKO-M on one of my rifles for 6 months now and have not encountered any problems regarding the wire.
I ran the wire to the grip on my rifle so that I can fire it with one hand if neccessary and still use the dot. I leave the OKO on the most common brightness setting I use, and have instant access to it by squeezing the pressure switch rather than spinning the dial.
The speed advantage of the pressure switch system gives the OKO-M a great advantage over other red dot sights for Personal Protection in the Home, or for LE patrol car use. Worries about running down the battery are now a non issue, since it is only being used momentarily and the battery life is 150 (highest setting) to 1500 (lowest setting) hours.
I the OKO for everyone? Probably not, personal preference plays a large part in all of our decisions as to what we equip our rifles with. I do believe the OKO is just as good a sight as the Aimpoint or EOtech, though all 3 sights have specific advantages over each other.
