Is a 30 rounder really a 30 round mag?....What is the wisdom for 20 and 30 rounders.... How many for good function?...With 30 rounds and 29 rounds and 28 rounds I have a partial bolt closure like there is too much force on the bottom of the bolt..The army must have been thru this years ago...How many rounds do you load in your 20 and 30 round mags?...Thanks

This comes up quite often.  You'll get a bunch of replies.  Some download the mags by one or two rounds and I think the general reason is to make insertion of the mag on a closed bolt easier.

That being said, I load my 30 rounders w/ 30 rounds.

My bolt recoil spring is brand new...What other thing could cause the bolt not to feed the first round completely?

Good advice so far on mag capacity, but I have to ask.....are you lubing your gun properly?  It sounds like your bolt may be "sticking."

If it's USGI, 20 in a 20, 30 in a 30.    I have dropped a few from not smacking them in tight, but have learned from that.

HK mags allow extra, so they hold 31, but I think the little bit of extra depth is to make inserting a full 30 easier.

It feels like a 28/30, thus making insertion easier.  Kosmo

Heck if you load 30 in a 30 and the bolt won't close ain't that what the bolt assist is for?

Smack it and shoot!

to me, 30 means 30.

20 means 20.

that is all.

If you're shooting is limited to punching paper from a bench, stuff you mags until they won't hold anymore.

bad advice !! VERY BAD ADVICE !![/red i have found some 20s & 30s will hold 21 & 31 rnds, if you stuff them with one extra round, i gurantee a failure to feed if the bolt/carrier is locked back & if loaded with BC locked you will have difficulty in pulling the charging handle.., count'm, 20 in a 20 & 30 in a 30 it is just that simple !!
