Never seen a steel baseplate, floorplate except there may be steel ones on USA or other generic aftermarket mags. Every USGI magazine I have ever seen has had aluminum.

You've got to have several places locally that anodize aluminum; it's a very common proceedure, and it will probably cost very little. Check the phone book or Yahoo Yellow Pages.

I've always just hit them w/ some Alumahyde from Brownells. Cheap, quick, looks great!

I usually hit them with Birch Wood Casey Aluma-Black. If they are really bad, I sandblast them, gently, and then dip them in... This should be done with gloves and in a well ventilated area. (I might try that next time, cough-cough)

Set-up charges will probably kill you at a local shop - on the order of $75, as I recall.
See if they can stick you in a batch of someone else's work. |
