First, try seating it bolt-forward, with the mag EMPTY. It should seat with little effort, and would tell you that the mag itself is fine.
It is NORMAL for the mag to be difficult to load with the bolt foward when the mag is fully loaded. You normally have to give the mag a firm smack on the bottom to get it to lock in place, because the bolt hits the top round and has to push the entire stack of ammo down to the very bottom of the mag, against a fully-compressed spring.
Some folks don't like to do this for whatever reason, and will down-load their mag 1 or 2 rounds. I keep mine fully loaded, and just give them a little smack. I've never had a problem.
NOTE: while this *should* apply to other kinds of AR mags, I do this primarily with USGI mags. Other mags, particularly plastic ones, may spew ammo when smacked from the bottom, which is another reason to avoid them.
