62gr Federal Bonded Tactical and 75gr Speer Gold Dot both have good reputation for non-fragmenting rounds

Speer is good. Maybe some of the new Hornady SBR ammo?

Fusion MSR, but I have zero worry about if it goes through interior/exterior walls. It expands down to ~1700fps. But I'm not an ammo guru - I could see the super light, hyper-fragmenting stuff, being comforting in an apartment/condo, etc... as long as it gets deep enough.

Mk262 clones and maybe a magazine or two of a barrier blind loading (TSX is excellent in that regard).

There are rounds that will do marginally better than 77gr SMK in a home defense role, but I think it's the strongest balance of terminal performance, accuracy, and price. It's an outstanding bullet.

Great round. But you’re only getting about 200 rounds for the $300 OP has to invest. Other good options out there he could stack a little deeper.

Gold Dots or Fusion
Remington Core Lokt Ultra Bonded (currently sold under two different loadings)
Federal TBBC

Each of the above can be found fairly cheap (by defensive ammo standards). My personal favorite is the Remington CLUB. Got lucky and stumbled across a nice quantity of it being clearanced by Field and Stream a few years ago.

And my current wildcard for all these threads...

DRT - Variety of bullet weights, up to 79gr. Barrier blind. Good penetration. And a crazy low velocity threshold for repeatable performance.

HD, or truck gun/shtf?

If you're not concerned with over penetration, then I'd suggest MK318.

Public Service Announcement: I've had my number stolen a few times (couldn't say if from Target Sports, I used them, but no theft occurred soon after to make a connection). I started using Privacy.com. They are well known in the computer privacy realm, so I didn't worry about it being a scam. They have an App that is linked to a checking account (if you've got a no fee bank, just go create a "web purchase only" checking account if you want - and move money into it, each time). With the App, you basically create a "Credit Card" that can only be used by the merchant you created it for, and as additional safety, you can even set limits on what even they can do. You can also anonymize where you are buying from, so that your bank doesn't see "Ammo Hoarder dot com" as the source. I've used it at every major gun related place, and it always works. You get an immediate notification from Privacy.com, and then a few days later, you'll see a checking withdrawal via your bank alerts. It's free for a certain number of "Merchant Cards" - I'm up to I think 8 places and I still don't need to upgrade to the $10/Month plan. Check website for all details, not affiliated, just got sick of hackers buying plane tickets at China Air.

Maybe 200 of the 55gr Gold Dot (or Fusion MSR if you can find it at a good price)
200 rounds of a MK262 clone (IMI or CBC)
and maybe 100 rounds of MK318

It should cover all scenarios since I'm not sure about your expected max range.

Ok, I'll say it.
Take about $130 of that $300 and go to RTB.  Pick up a .300blk barrel, a birdcage or mini-KAK can, and a pistol gas tube. (Right now a BA modern 10.5" is $5 cheaper than a BA modern 8.5"....$105 vs $110).

$110 plus shipping at SGammo will get you a 200 round can of Hornady Black 110gr Vmax.

Outside of that...how important is being barrier blind in 5.56?  That could make a difference.  Do you have other barrel lengths as well?

If all I had was $300 I'd buy a case of M855 or 193 and take my chances.

From what I've seen in regards to gel tests, the 62g soft points may not be a bad choice.
