there is some in a local gunshop for $5.59 per box of 20.  I am sure that this is high but is it good ammo and where else can it be found.

It's most likely Radway Green ammo. First-class fodder, but they stopped importing it awhile ago, which drove prices higher (no surprise).  My M1A loves the stuff, but that's a little pricey when South African is just about as good.
The last RG I saw in any quantity was belted. Ever take apart a few hundred rounds with pliers and gloves? I wont be doing that again if I can help it....
