There are several '9mm' calibers out there:

9mm short, 9x19, 9x21, ect

9MM NATO is equivalent to 9x19mm, 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum and probably some others.

The important detail is that the case is 19mm long, as compared to other "9mm" rounds like 9mm Kurz (or short) which is really .380 auto, 9mm Makarov (9x18mm), and 9mm Largo (9x21mm?).

Yes. Nato loading is like a +p, or from what I'm told a +p plus a little but not enough to be a +p+.

In a nutshell, it's hotter than standard saami 9mm. But I believe most modern pistols can handle it. I could be wrong about that. It's always good to check with the manufacture of your pistol or carbine or whateve you're shooting.

9mm NATO is generally loaded to higher pressures than domestic 9mm. When Walther first started importing their P-99's some of them would not cycle domestic 9mm because of this.

9mm nato (from ammoman) is a lot closer to major in IPSC scoring than it is to minor. HK usp never had a problem with it.

Major pf= 165 (bw*vel/1000)
minor pf = 125 (bw * vel/1000)

I was getting over a 155 power facotr w/ the nato loading.

regular american egale red box ie 115 gr 9mm is a close second.

rem cheap ammo is a weaker than cci blazer and blazer is less than federal.

9mm NATO is loaded to higher pressures than SAAMI spec 9mm, and is 124 gr. FMJ. Kind of think of it as the difference between 5.56 and .223.

I believe 5.56 and .223 have other differences as well though - differences that matter to the specs of the chamber. In the case of 9mm, AFAIK, all the dimensions of the rounds and the chambers are the same, it's just a matter of pressure.

Winchester RA9TA (127gr +P+) comes out to 159 pf, and based on data in another nearby thread, Hirtenberger "L7A1" 9mm subgun ammo would be 180 pf. Does this mean you could shoot a 9mm pistol in a major competition if you used that ammo and it chronoed in that range at the competition?

I only got a 135 PF from my Sig 226 using the M882. I never chronoed my Glock though

Here is some actual chronograph data for Federal's NATO M882 along with several other loads for comparison. Testing was done using a SIG Sauer P229 with a 3.8" barrel. An Oehler 35P chronograph was used and muzzle velocities were calculated from instrumental velocities using Oehler's Ballistic Explorer software. All strings of fire consisted of 10 rounds each and were fired under similar environmental conditions.

Load muzzle velocity

Federal 124 Hydra-Shock 1019 fps

Federal NATO M882 1049 fps

Hornady 124 XTP 1051 fps

Remington 124 JHP 1070 fps

Federal 124 +P+ Hydra-Shock 1117 fps

Not blue tip. Looks like a standard FMJ.

We are told it's rated at over 1200 fps/124gr out of the M9. The stuff sure feels hotter than standard practice ammo I've shot through my personal 92.
