so I just got a new shippment of XM855PD and wanted to really test it out good. So my friend and I went out in the woods with our AR's, 855 and a big chunck (4"X3.5"X2" thick) of High Carbon Steel. here are the results of the "test"

thinking that absolutly nothing would happen the the block the first shot was from about 30 yards out of my 16" barrel. WAM it knocked the chunck off the board it was on and when  inspecting we see a big hole burried in it about 3/4" into the chunck WOW. so we began having some fun with it.... there are 2 or 3 shots that we took at it from a little closer in that actualy penitrated the whoe way through the 3/4" tick side! now remember that this is REALLY HARD METAL not just cast iron or something.... this was heat treated high carbon steel.

I have seen a few injuries first hand and some DANGEROUS close calls while shooting at hard steel.

MINIMIUM RANGE FOR SAFETY IS 100 yards, and sometimes, thats not enough.

Sorry forgot to mention that we where hunkered down behind about a 3ft round oak tree while shooting at it so as to minimise the exposure area. and all whering safty glasses were not idiots I know what splash back can do.  SAFTY FIRST! ;-)

I can't even count how many times I've been hit by rocks, spent projectiles, bits of wood, jacket fragments, ricocheting rounds, and other assorted crap.  Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean the berm isn't out to get you.

This reminds me of a story that a friend of mine told me.  During the first Gulf war, he was in the "Iron Fist" 2nd Brigade, 3rd ID.  It started when 50 Iraqi regulars engaged a pair of scouting Bradleys when the Bradleys happened upon the Iraqis entrenchments on the backside of a slight ridge line.  When the shooting started, the Bradleys hauled out, doubled back and called for reinforcement.  The Iraqis surrendered when the position was approached again.  The Iraqis were taken prisoner.  Two of the Iragis were wounded by their own ricochets off the Bradleys.  The Bradleys never fired a shot.

Most 5.56 works really well against mild steel.

Just a little heads up, Last spring I was shooting at some 1095 High Carbon Steel..........it was a old shear blade 1 inch thick.  Weapon was a M1 Garand, ammo was True USGI AP distance of 100 yards.

First shot came back and nailed me in the left shoulder....there were no folow up shots

anyway  here is the "Target"



That AP round just peeled the paint off it it, and put a little ding in the plate from point of impact
My left shoulder ended up with a bullet in it........so count yourself lucky
