Tracer tips by NATO standard are red (M196) or orange (M856).
Black tip means AP (armor piercing) and the only US 5.56mm AP is M995 AP which has no tracer and which has never been released to the civilian market. I'm not sure what you have. M196 TR has a red tip, is .91" (23.1mm) long, and weighs 54gr. -- Chuck |

I had some of these several years ago and just loaded them using 55 gr data, shot fine.

Ok my fault I think mine are the red tipped, if that is the older of the two. I am not interested in making them tracers, but was just wondering how they would shoot empty. Thanks for the info so far.

I would think they would be ok, but I don't see why they would be any more accurate than any other FMJ load.
