It is usually packed in 20-round boxes in ammo cans, but it is also available on strippers in bandoleers for "combat use." It's more expensive that way, so they use the boxed ammo when possible. The US doesn't use vinyl "battle packs" at all.

based on my experience, I mostly saw M855 come in boxes of 30 rnds on three stripper clips. those boxes were in a green cloth bandoleer and several bandoleers came in an ammo can. each bandoleer came with a speed loader attachment inside. Also saw a lot come linked in 200 rnd plastic boxes for M249. Those were in ammocans with little bandoleers too as I recall.

The outer box is shrink-wrapped in 5-millimeter-thick Polyethylene bags for waterproofing That must be one hell of a shrink wrap machine. |

That's definitely a gift for the shooter who has everything.
How cool would it be to be the first kid on your block (or shooting club) to own a skid of GI M193 or M855? I'm sure guys like Eric over at ammoman.com see skids all the time but I haven't laid hands on one since the last time I got stuck on ammo point detail back in '85. At that volume I bet you could get it for a lot less than $170 per thousand too. |

That "5 millimeter" shrink wrap has to be a typo. Film and thin sheeting is normally graded by "mil" indicating thousandths of on inch. Probably 0.005" PE and not 0.200". At 0.2"PE, the old wooden crates would strip down faster.

Only real-world problem with the commercial pack is that 99.9% of GI's don't have a "spoon" or speed loading clip when they get to the range, and there is not included in the box.
Most of the time, when I ask if anyone has one, I hear,"Shit, it's in my desk", or "Shit! At home in my junk drawer." |

If old surplus ammo is suppose to get bad as it gets old (so i have read), how does it last in sealed battle packs? The air cant get to it.
