Hornady has a new line of ammo in both .223 75 grain BTHP and 5.56mm NATO 75 grain BTHP, both are supposed to be about 200 feet per second faster than any other previous ammo with new bullets too..
Here is their new info: http://www.hornady.com/store/Superformance-Match Here is their You-Tube video about the new ammo: http://www.hornady.com/store/5.56-NATO-75-gr-BTHP-Superformance-Match/ Have to try this out for hunting! |
|
Maybe one day they will go into the powder business so we can get some of this powder they are using???
|
|
Interesting.... Looks like the .223 loading gets bumped to 5.56 Nato performance - which puts the 5.56 Nato load as......drummm roolllll...... Double Nato!!!! I'll take some!

They list the performance for all the ammo except the NATO 5.56.... hmmmm.
|
|
I wonder what barrel length they tested at to achieve 100-200 fps faster....also, at least in the ad, it says 100-200 fps faster than "Any conventional ammunition," it doesnt actually say it is faster than it was, just faster than the conventional competition
My guess........Hype to sell more ammo. |
|
i wounder if the 5.56 would be better then 5.56 75g Tap for defence. ammo

Will this actually be available to us peons, or will it be LEO only, forcing us to buy from secondary sellers at a big price increase?

When I got home last night, my new issue of the American Rifleman had the same information. This is great news for us heavy OTM handloaders BTW, Hodgdon has the new spherical SUPERPERFORMANCE powder burn rate listed as one of the slowest burning powders produced by any manufacturer, slower than Varget, TAC, WIN 748, BLC-2.... |

sperformance = super price wonder what the profit margin is on it bling bling ammmo i gots ta have it

I'm guessing that Hornady will not deem us civilians worthy of their new best ammo. I guess they figure if something bad happens, that sooner or later the police will show up and kill the bad guys for us with 5.56 TAP. It leaves a very bad taste in my mouth that Hornady doesn't think that the lives of me and my family are worth less than those of the police. I'm sure they rationlize this saying that they don't want to have their ammo to fall into the hands of bad guys, but if that is truly their concern how can they sell any JHP 9mm, .40 or .45 ammo with a clear conscience. My guess is that is more of a sales gimmick, i.e. "Sgt. McGruff, this is best ammo available, it is so deadly that we won't sell it to the unwashed masses." How many bangers actually use ARs, and of those, how many make sure they don't leave home without their TAP? It's their company and ammo and they can sell it to whomever they want. It's my money and I can but my ammo wherever I want.

I don't think Hornady has this in mind at all when they restrict sales to LEO/MIL. I'm sure it's a product liability issue: they wish to avoid being sued by someone damaging their rifle (or themselves) by shooting 5.56-pressure ammo through a tight-chambered .223 gun. Other ammo manufacturers like Silver State Armory do sell 5.56 pressure ammo directly to the public, but Hornady has almost certainly made a corporate decision based on legal advice. |

I'm thinking it's more a marketing issue. Why make available to the public the 5.56 load that they sell to LE at lower LE prices when they can sell us nickel-plated .223 "FPD" 20 rounds at a time for 26 bucks a box? It's the same reason why Winchester restricts their Ranger T and Federal restricts their HST. Why let the public buy the best at a cut rate when the public will pay even more money for smaller quantities of lesser-quality goods? They can churn out .223 cheaper, put it in a fancy box and charge *more* for it than they sell the full-pressure, more costly "police-only" ammo. If it was a legal liability issue, then companies like federal et al would not be shipping thousand round bulk cases of blems and seconds of full-pressure 5.56 to consumers. |

Is 5.56 pressure that dangerous in a .223 chamber? I understand that it is not a good idea and could lead to extraction problems, busted cases, popped primers, etc. But going from .223 loads to 5.56 only gets you about 6% or 7% increase of velocity so how much extra power is there really? Hard to imagine enough power to blow up the gun or injure the shooter only gives you 7%...? I'm just asking, I don't claim any expertise, and yes I've seen Kaboom pictures but is there any factual information that 5.56 in a .223 chamber caused any of them?

All the other superformance ammo is available right off the hornady website. Has Hornady done this in the past? Is any of their ammo restricted? I honestly don't know. It seems easy enough to just order off their website if you really want it. Or, search around for a better price. I know I've seen a number of superformance tv commercials on lately, so it would seem very very very odd if they didn't allow sale to the general public. |

Yep... confirmed the original post has the url where you can purchase the ammo right from the website.

It is available to the public. Just ordered a couple boxes of the 5.56 from Cheaperthandirt.com for $17.01/box.

I assume they just got the velocity and energy backwards. If that is the case, any idea what barrel length that velocity is from? |

Read Molon's post here http://www.ar15.com/mobile/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=513781 FB Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile I recently picked up some 75's for handloading for my 1:8 but went ahead and tried them in 2 1:9 barrels. I was pleasantly surprised that they did stabilize but I wouldn't bet on it for every rifle. Only one way to find out. |

I just found this stuff on Ammo-to-go's site...
5.56 Nato Hornady Superformance 75gr. Boattail Notice the product number... 81264 seems awlful close to... ATG's price for 200 is about what I paid for the last 200rds of the 8126N stuff. I wonder (hope) its the same round in a more PC packaging? Has anybody gotten any of this yet? If so, does it have cannelure? Really looking forward to a Molon type report on this stuff compared to the 8126N TAP |

I ordered some from CTD and FedX is due to deliver it tomorrow.
Most likely it is the Match Reloading Bullet but who knows? I'll check and see if it has a channelure or not. |

I have some 8126N, but do you guys think this is just as good/better?
I need something good for long range shooting (~500yrds) in my 24" 1/8 twist Stag. Also should i stock up, or will this be around for a while? |

You can make T1 TAP for fractions of what his stuff costs. |

I assume they just got the velocity and energy backwards. If that is the case, any idea what barrel length that velocity is from? If you check the original links, 2930 fps is the "new" .223 round out of a 24" barrel. The 5.56 round is stated to perform at 2910 fps out of a 20" barrel. On a quick side note, my 2nd Edition Lee Reloading Manual lists a maximum velocity .223 Rem. load for a 75gr jacketed bullet at 2924 fps (25.5 gr). Checking at the Accurate powders website to see the test barrel length, they've actually downgraded that to 24.5gr and 2866 fps. That's out of a 24" barrel. I'm assuming then, that the "old" 25.5 gr load at 2924 fps was also out of a 24" barrel and that this "new" load from Hornady at 2930 fps (24" barrel) is not really that impressive. |

CQB LOAD Kinda what I was thinking, although at CQB you don't really need the extra velocity. |

CQB LOAD Kinda what I was thinking, although at CQB you don't really need the extra velocity. 3 MOA at 200yds is still a hit, if aimed center mass. If I recall correctly, frag threshold for 8126N is mid 100 yds or so. Increasing the MV would extend this a bit (maybe not all the way to 200yd) but it would still be close enough that accuracy of the load would not be a real issue. |
