Out to 100 yards my Colt AR15 Lightweight Match with Hirtenberger 124gr +P+ high pressure sub-gun ammo is more accurate than any of our AR10’s but some how I cant hit the broad side of a barn with it at 200 yards.

I saw ballistic info included in with one of the Keltec rifles and it seemed decent enough, but I don't have it handy so I don't recall retained energy and such...

The sight radius has nothing to do with able to hit. It's how the sights are set and the shooter (sorry). Out of my 16" ASA 9mm using standard 115gr ball ammo (Winchester), I can hit a 18" steel gong at 200 and 250yds with the sights. It takes time, but it gets there. You have enough time to lift your head and then hear the "twing".
I have some ballistic software.... 115gr bullet (winchester) @ 1300fps (maybe a little slow) 100yd zero 50yd...........2.54" 100yd..........0.00" 150yd..........10.49 200yd..........30.2" 250yd..........60.34" same bullet but zero-ed at 225yds 50yds..........12.29 100yd..........19.51 150yd..........18.77 200yd..........8.81 250yd..........-11.57 edit- I have mine set to about 225yd... it since it shoots about 6" high at 25yds. |

I can consistently group dimes and quarters all day long with a full sight radius (20" barrel or a dissipator), but the shorter 16" barreled sight radius only allows me to stay an paper at best with no consistent grouping. Optics have fixed that for me. I don't know if THISISME has to wears glasses, but if he does, we share the same problem that optics help to nullify. |

Hitting a gong at 200 meters is no problem with my RR 9mm. It's actually a lot of fun to shoot that far and hear it hit.
As for sighting, I sight mine in for a 25 meter zero, since that is what I intend to do most of my shooting at. I can then crank up the elevation on the carry handle sight until I get hits at that range. I forgot the settings so I'll have to tape them to my buttsctock when I get a chance. As for ammo, nothing works better for me than cheapo bulk pack Winchester 115gr FMJ. Good Shooting RED Good Shooting RED |

Hey Redleg.........reminds me of the last time I took my 9mm COLT out and shot metal gongs at long range.............hell it was a longgggggg time between pulling the trigger and hearing the impact.
So, I guess.........I wonder how effective will the bullet actually be at that range? Not that I want to stand there to find out. Makes me wonder about using a 9mm carbine/sub gun (full auto) in war time. Just thinking........ |

I just bought a Colt Lightweight Sporter (tonight) and haven't fired it yet. I notice that the rear peep is marked "50 M " on one leaf. Assuming you zero at 50 meters using this leaf, where does the other leaf hit ?

I have a 20in 9mm barrel that I took off a gun that I subsequently reg'd as an SBR (something prosaic about doing that...). This thread has got me thinking I want to shoot that barrel and find out its characteristics. More to follow. charles |

I've been considering whether or not to have the 16" Oly barrel shortened to say 14.5" and have a brake permenantly installed to bring it out to 16".
Any thoughts, concerns - how much will this effect accuracy/velocity? |

I have read in the past that optimal barrel length for 9mm was in the neighborhood of 5.75"
That having been said, the criteria for that determination was to derive maximal velocity, rather than accuracy. I have a variety of barrels down to 5", and it might be a project to bench shoot the same receiver/lower combo with a variety of lengths. It would actually be fairly easy to do, given that I already have an SBR setup with Hogue free-float tube. Just swap barrels. Same bolt and internals. Hmmm, sounds like a spring project, since it is too cold to shoot right now. No, strike that, too cold to have fun shooting... charles |

Sure the 9mm round is accurate out to 100 yards.
Kel Tec Sub 2000 carbines are zero'd at 100 yards from the factory. That speaks volumes. |
