So, I picked up some Colt F1 and F2 marked grips at a show today and they were all equally faded. Other than products for automotive trim, any other methods for restoring the color on these. Colts are the bookends, with a new one in the middle for reference.

Ya, use them.  The oils from your hand sweat and the slight wearing will make them look pretty in no time...

They aren't actually worn. That chalky look is how most colt grips are when they are brand new.

Hoppe's #9 or lcp on an old tooth brush and go to town.  That's what l've always done.

Use what our finest in uniform use. CLP on a rag.

Thanks everyone. Good to know they came that way. I can live with it. Makes sense, because all four are equally faded.

I spray some silicone on a rag and then wipe them down. It darkens the finish and takes away the chalky look, but doesn't leave the oily feel from CLP or other lubricants.

Now that I have one installed I actually like the look.

Apply some mineral oil to it, let sit overnight, and buff with a clean cotton rag in the morning.

CLP BreakFree was formulated for the M-16, we used it in Basic Training, so that's what I have always used on my AR-15's since then.

I think it would look nice with grey metal & a grey A2 stock

I put one on this one I just pieced together. John Thomas cut and pinned the barrel for me.

It won't stay grey, just use and handling will turn it black.

Why are you opposed to auto products?

I would guess that Mother's back to black would work

I’m not. Was just looking for other options that I might already have around the house. They’ve actually grown on me as is.

It sounds like too much work to blacken them up.  Why don't you let me swap you out a couple of fresh new A2 grips - I must have a couple laying around somewhere

Seriously though, I gotta find a show like that - I am working on my first A2 clone and hate the cheap plastic grips.  Just didn't want to buy new Colt if I could find an old one.  Are the new Colts pretty much the same?

I have met the best people here on Arfcom!  JoeBud - You Rock!  My colt upper is shipping this week, colt FCG as well.  I have a basic lower ready (well, just moved so I have to find the right box ) now to track down a buttstock!
Thanks again,
Mike
