I googled them and searched Sigs website and no soap! As in not there.

Surprised it took them this long to sell out with the sale.

As has been discussed in other threads, this particular 14.5 upper was apparently part of a military contract, and those being sold by Sig were overruns/over-production models.  I bought a couple.  They came with FA BCG, which is not the norm for Sig civilian sales.  Will be interesting to see what Sig does with the 516 in the future for civilian sales, i.e. with their emphasis on the MCX platform (which apparently is doing very well).  Last time I checked, the 16" 516 upper was no longer listed either.  Sig is a big company that is selling a lot of rifles to military/LE units around the world.  They have a lot of production capability but who knows when there will be 516 uppers available again.

516 is going to be dead soon outside of .gov support on them...MCX is their king.

I hope not, but you may be right.  I have actually discussed this with Sig CS reps, and their "answer" has always been that there are no plans to discontinue the 516, and that support for the 516 will continue for the foreseeable future.  Now if Sig wins the pending big army contract for the new 6.8 rifle, then all bets are off, as that is an MCX based weapon.  Hard to see the 516/716 surviving once that happens (if it does).

Well, I have five (5) of them, a 16, 3-14.5s, and a 10, so I am well equipped for now.  I also have a bunch of spare parts including piston valves, pushrod assemblies, springs, etc.  I assume that in the event I did need something from Sig, it would still be available.  But who can blame Sig for going with a proprietary system (MCX) that appears to be well received and extremely versatile.  I will probably be adding one in the future.  As for future AR purchases, well, let's see:  HK MR556, LWRCI, LMT, KAC, Centurion Arms . . . still lots of good choices out there.

Yeah, but only discounted if you also buy the pistol brace and tube as a "bundle."  $549.  Not bad.  Guess they want to move some braces and tubes.  Upper by itself is the original price of $1155.  I think I have enough for now.

Wow didn't notice you had to get the combo. That sucks but still a good deal. Also if anyone is wondering you should be able to pin and weld the sig SRD-556 QD flash hider to get the overall required length I just measured it and it's 2 5/16 inches. I was looking online for this info and couldn't find it. I'm shooting it today prior to getting it welded to confirm function also you'll have to get the flash hider welded to the mount as it's two seperate pieces.

The 14.5 with the srd 556 qd worked great but the gun shop couldn’t weld the flash hider to the mount. They told me to look for a tig welding specialist to get it welded then they could pin and weld it to the rifle. RIP I’m going to try another shop otherwise I’ll be looking at how much it’ll be and if it’s worth doing.

Having never shot a piston before, is recoil higher or lower than a comparable DI system?

What muzzle device are you guys putting on these?

I wouldn't say the recoil is higher, just different, i.e. snappier.  I have five (5) 516s.  On four of them I have VG6 muzzle brakes.  I have a 10" model which has a 3 prong flash hider.  I think they are very comfortable to shoot.

I got one of the 516 14.5" uppers the last time they were on sale. I put it on my Colt 6920 lower and had an AAC Blackout flash hider pinned and welded on it. I changed out the bolt carrier group (semi-auto BCG) with a LWRCI full auto bolt carrier group. Just took it to the range for the first time today and it worked flawlessly. Besides functioning flawlessly, the best part was how simple and quick it was to clean afterwards. Almost zero carbon on the bolt carrier group and just a little in the barrel. Gas pistons rock. I also took my Colt M16 direct impingement rifle and it was disgustingly filthy after firing only 90 rds. Yesterday morning about 2 AM I got the e-mail from Sig on the new batch of 516 uppers for sale and got one ordered for $399.

Thats a smoking deal.  I can't add much beyond that, except that I bought two at $499 the last sale.  Left one alone, and had ADCO cut one to 11.5" so I could build this.

The upper was $499, $170 for ADCO to cut the barrel and remove the bayonet lug.  I bought the stripped LMT MARS-L lower on the EE for $250, don't remember exactly what the VLTOR A5 tube and buffer cost exactly.  SSA trigger and lower parts from the parts bin.  And the $200 for the stamp.

Good grief, that is one fine looking rifle.  Did you have Adco mess with the gas port?  If not, how doe it shoot with the standard gas port?  Asking because I'm thinking about cutting one of my 14.5s to 12.5.

I'm not sure if they opened the gas port or not.  I've read the 516's are overgassed to start.  I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, hopefully later this month.

My 10” is way overgassed suppressed with my Turbo.
I bought a smaller port valve and it helped a bit. I’d like to have it just barely cycle 100% when clean running wolf gold. I’m sure I need to have the gas block pressed off and the port closed up a bit.

Interesting to note that in the new Sig 2020 online catalog (you can find it at Sig's website), the 516 is nowhere to be found.  I have no idea if this means it has been discontinued, but it is not listed in the new "public" catalog.  Now it may very well be that it is still available to LE and military purchasers, but I have no info to verify that.  I have put a request in to Sig to find out what is going on.  No response yet.  I am one of their biggest 516 fanboys (I have five of them) and I obviously love the rifle.  So if there is another sale of 14.5 uppers, get them while you can, as the 516 may become very scarce.

Hey Kyd, I didn't think to ask if they were discontinued. The guy couldn't allow me to back order. I've been watchin for em like a hawk, but still missed em. Yeah Kyd, inherited my first one, then had to build my own with the 14.5 upper and a genuine Sig lower. Payed too much for the lower but I have my own 516. And I love em!!!

Sig lowers are not cheap on the secondary market, to be sure.  But they are high quality, and I prefer them when I can find one at a semi-reasonable price.

I got to shoot it today.  It wont cycle unsuppressed with the gas on the normal setting, works fine on the adverse position.  With my Surefire 212A suppressor it cycles and locks back on normal, cycles but won't lock back on suppressed.  This was with 5.56 ammunition.

I'm going to start messing with one of my extra gas valves, start opening up the holes until it cycles and locks back properly.

I got in on two of the 14.5" before they went oos. Never shot or played with one, so not sure how I will like it. For piston AR I prefer the design and engineering of the PWS long stroke system. But I look forward to trying the 516. Especially for $400. Figured if I don't like it, I should be able to sell it fairly easily.

Anyone run one of those Lancer carbon fiber rails? Was thinking of keeping one upper at 14.5" w/ the Lancer handguard. Then maybe send the other upper off to get cut down.
Link Posted: 2/8/2020 1:58:40 PM EDT

I have the long Lancer carbon fiber rail  on a 16" 516 that I have essentially turned into a DMR style rifle.  I like the rail a lot.  Fits well and is a lot sturdier than I expected it to be.  Besides the CF rail, I also added a Geissele SSA-E trigger, Atlas bipod, B5 sopmod stock, and a Trijicon Accupower 1-8X28 scope on a Geissele mount.  VG6 muzzle brake.

The Lancer rail is about the only option I am aware of if you want to replace the factory picatiny rails.  But as I said above, it is a nice rail, looks and fits very well.

kyjd75 thanks for your post. I know you have quite a few of the Sig 516 uppers and I like them. Figured the best and only way for me is to try one out myself. Only real way to know.

Anyone have a picture of the short Lancer handguard on a Sig 516 upper? I only see pictures of the longer handguard. The short handguard pictures are of the handguard only.
