I am looking for one to complete my build.  I am torn between SBR and a 16" P&W.  Looks like AR15sport had one that would fit the bill but they are sold out.  What are the best options?

I bought the one from John Thomas at Retro arms works.
Its the exact external dimension as the originals.
I went SBR on an 11.5 inch barrel.
Best part about that?
If I feel the need, I swap the moderator for an A1 flash hider and go Commando/RO733

I ordered one from retro rifles a few weeks ago, but suspect I'm not going to get it any time soon.

Might just make a correct moderator and Form 2 it.

If you want a fairly accurate to original I'd contact John Thomas also @ Retro Arms Works.

I have a 16" p&w and I hate it.  Will be SBRing and going with the 10.5/no grenade ring setup soon.

Yep, that's sexy.  As soon as my A2 Blood Diamond clone is done I'll be shooting for exactly what you've got.

You want a 10.0” barrel for retro authenticity. The barrel should not be visible between the front sight base and the moderator on a correct 10.0” barrel; there is just enough room for the split lock washer.

Umm... no.

XM177E2s were built with 11.5" barrels.

Yes, the XM177E1 had a 10" barrel but it also had reliability and accuracy issues which is why the E2 replaced it.

Since we were discussing 10.5” barrels, the natural assumption is that either the XM177 or XM177E1 would be the model being replicated, and both of those used 10.0” barrels. Many people incorrectly believe that the XM177 and XM177E1 used 10.5” barrels, so whenever I hear someone in Retro mention 10.5”, I figure they are talking about the 10-incher.

Then again, this thread is about the XM177E2, which certainly did use an 11.5” barrel.

Correct for a XM177 or XM177E1. I was trying to stay on topic with the thread title though.

I SBR'd mine with 11.5" barrel and cut down a slip over FH. Probably not clone correct but I likes it!
Not much of a flash hider. Great big fireballs!

That's cool.

If I had a cutter for the slots so I could make my own I'd probably make something similar.  I just made this for my BD clone.

I bought one from Northern Gun Parts that has been great, but heavy.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a lighter weight version that still looks correct?  I believe mine is the full moderator weight of 10-12oz.

Griffin Armament did a run a few years ago and I picked up one of those for my build.  I don’t think they list the on their website anymore, but may want to keep and eye out on gunbroker or other auction sites.

Website is oos, but lists the specs

Yeah, I was looking to buy that from them, but the broker who'd import it decided to stop doing anything other than actual firearms, IIRC. Would have been cheaper for me to drive to to Canada, buy it, and... "magically" it would appear Stateside at some later time all legit pinky swear.

I suspect it was a really limited run at Griffin, and enough people ended up asking about it that they got pissed and took down the product page.

I just ordered one of the Brownells Retro moderators, so we'll see what those are like.

This is one of the Brownells, good quality, although a little hard to see in the picture.

Barrel is a 16" pencil Maine Bushmaster that I had turned down and threaded, it shoots around 1.5 MOA with my Hornady bulk 55gr reloads, didn't want to cut it.

@WA-Tom

Back in the old days of retro building, Total Silence Inc made the best moderators.

I wish that they were still in the game.

Does anyone have the weight of a Brownells XM Flash hider handy?  With or without the grenade ring.

I weighed mine and it was 6.25 oz, and just shy of 7oz with the grenade ring.

Yeah, IIRC I have 3 NIW in my retro parts box.

I may have to get off of my ass and use
them on some XM177E2 builds.

The other impressive thing about the Total Silence
Moderators is that they were manufactured to use
"Hollywood" BFAs.

Looks like a guy on the Sturmgewehr For Sale board just posted 607 and XM177 moderators (one each) by Total Silence in early April; claims to be new (although that XM one looks pretty funky) for $250 each. NFA on a Form 4, buyer pays transfer, he's in TX and prefers a Texas buyer.

Found via Google search for "Total Silence XM177".

I always like the old bushmaster ones, and then have wrench flats milled on them and re-park.  I thought they were just the right weight for muzzle device.

The original military ones weren't engraved.  Civilian and export had the full Colt commercial NFA markings.
