Alright guys. I need some help. I've been trying to decide for the past few days on which retro build I'd like to emulate (it's not going to be 100% accurate).

Should I try for a XM177E1 (10 inch? What is the exact barrel length?) or XM177E2 (11.5 inch)? Yeah I know the classic answer will be get both but thats won't happen right now. I already have the stock, upper (thank uxb), moderator (and grenade ring), grip, handguards, SBR lower (in processing). All I have left is the barrel assembly, lower parts and bcg.

SO which one would you go with and why?

Probably easier to do as an E2...you are less likely to run into problems.

I would go with an E2, that is my personal favorite... If you do an E1 tho, remember not to use the grenade ring.

If spending the money for a stamp, I'd go E1.

I have both, but the E1 is my favorite.

I like the size and compactness and familiarity from having carried one.  While I like my E2, it just doesn't "feel" right to me.

10" is the length. And add the 4.5" moderator to that. If you're going to have a barrel cut (and you will have to, to get exactly 10"), send it to Randall at AR15Barrels and tell him that you want it cut to 10" and the gas port opened up. Tell him it's for an XM177E1 clone and he'll know what to do.

Build an E1, Ronzo

Just remember the grenade ring is not accurate for the E1. I would go for the E2 if it were me, just to have the 11.5" barrel. That extra 1 1/2" was added to enhance reliability. Also the NDS full fence lower is available now, the partial fence lower for the E1 will be a wait (unless you want it in the white).

I vote E1

its reasonable, common sense and for the children

Since you already have the grenade ring why not go ahead and do the E2. You can always build an E1 upper later. I built my E2 a long time ago and just recently built my E1 and feel that it was worth the wait.

One thing that you can do to enhance your reliability is to cut down a 16 inch barrel and use as much of that barrel as you can. The flash hider will hide the extended portion of the barrel.

For my 609 I started with a barrel that had been cut to 11.5 inches. It had been bandsaw cut so I had to recrown it. I turned and threaded it leaving as much of the original length possible. This is what it looks like now.

With the flash hider in place.

45Bravo,

Very interesting. So that xm moderator slips over a portion of the barrel? What length were you able to get 11.5?
