I am looking at a rifle for sale locally. It has Colt  AR-15 SP1 stamped and a serial of SP1683XX.

The database on TRBR website doesnt go that high. Is this a transitional SP2? It has no A2 features at all. Seller thinks the aftermarket LSO round handguards are factory. I had to correct him on that.

Probably made around 1983, Ive never been able to find a list of SNs that go past 1982. Could be wrong!

1982 production

The changes to A2 features were marked "SP2" was sometime after serial number 215XXX in 1985.

The first change to SP2/A2 features was the barrel and handguards.

I have been frustrated trying to figure out when my sp1 carbine was made its serial is 194xxx. I bought it new sometime in the '83-'85 time frame if I remember correctly. Anyone know when the 194k rifles were produced?
