cool. looks like it was indeed some tedious work to fit the A1 HG's to a free float tube, something that i never even thought about myself(and i come up with some crazy ideas).

hats off to some fine work there and also for your fine barrel services.

That's really cool. Do you have any photos of the guards mounted on the rifle?

That's pretty cool.

I've always liked the feel of the triangular handguards too. Just wish they were made out of stronger stuff.

Randall, thanks for finding that photo and posting it. That is so cool, kind of a Hot Rod Retro. It looks old on the outside but, with up graded running gear underneath.

I called it a "retro sleeper" when I built it.

Works for me. What ever you call it, it's cool.

Of course, the A1 is no longer legal for NRA/CMP service rifle shooting...

You HAVE to use A2 or A4 outward appearance to be in-regs for service rifle...

Quoted:
I don't know if these pictures ever made it here, but I sandwiched a DCM style freefloat tube inside some A1 handguards a few years back.
I don't really want to do this again as it involved a couple hours of fitting.
This is more to show YOU that it COULD be done if you were so-inclined.

The particular customer I did this for wanted a "sleeper" rifle, 1:8 twist heavy barrel that looked old and stock from the outside.
I love the flat bottom of the A1 handguards and my personal "utility" rifle is a 20" M16 clone.
With the heavy barrel, the rifle sits on your hand very nicely, like a DCM gun should.
