what are you going to do with it?

If you don't already have a 10.5" or 11.5", I would go with the 10.5". Gives you better reliability, less crud in the system, better velocity.
If you do have one of those, go with a 7.5" Very compact, very loud, but it more in line with a "pistol" build.
Don't believe it's a "Toy" Good to 100 yards. Use Hollow Points or soft tips for defensive ammo.

If it were me, and it was once, I'd go for a 7.5 pistol upper. Based upon what I read from the experience of other folks, 7.5" DI uppers can run a little dirty and can be more finicky by running reliably. I wanted a pistol that was as compact as possible so the 7.5" bbl upper was the best choice for me.

I've heard that 7.5 pistols have feeding problems and phase 5 tactical came up with a pigtail gas tube that gives it better cycling. It's the same lenght as a rifle gas tube but since it wraps around the barrel its will fit a 7.5 barrel

If you build a 7.5" using quality parts, it runs fine.
I built one using a Rainier Ultra Match barrel. Small gas port and it runs great.

I knew I was going to end up building another one of these, thanks guys, I already have a 11.5" I enjoy it, but those 7.5" look like fun. The 11.5" with A2 flash hinder doesn't seem any different muzzle blast or noise from shooting a full 16" barrel IMO. Maneuverability you can definitely tell it's shorter.

10.5 is what I went with, enough room for a light and most people to hold onto and use about the same as a carbine.  very happy with it from palmetto state armory.

AR pistols are real tools and not just toys. you are going to want both in the end...

I'd look at the 10.5 so if eventually you decided to make it a  SBR down the road you have a more versatile weapon. If you just want an AR pistol get the 7.5 and let the fire ball make you smile

When I build mine I plan on running a barrel in the 10 inch area, any shorter seems like it would be too short. Hell I have a glock with a 6 inch barrel, so for me 10 inches would be a good area.

I was thinking a Noveske 10.5" with a carbine length port.
