First, you need to decide where you want to compromise.
almost went with the MRP upper but then figured out I could build what I wanted for much less, ability to change barrel not that important.

Smart move
My main complaint with this barrel is that it is to heavy. Way to heavy in my opnion for a 16 incher.
|
If thats your main complaint, hit the gym!
My main praise for the barrel is that it is damn accurate 3/4" groups are the norm.
|
Keep the barrel. Hit the Gym!
This rifle will be used for Range Blasting, 3-Gun Comp, Home Deffense, shot off the Bench for groups and various types of Hunting.

List the priority in which you are willing to trade one for another of the above.
My typical practice session for 3 gun comp is about 500 rounds fired in 3-5 hours at least once a month and 80 -100 rounds fired in less than 2 hours 3 times. I do alot of multiple rounds on target multiple target drills. The point of all this is that this barrel is going to get HOT and be shot while it is hot. I need a barrel heavy to hold up to some heat, is it true that the "pencil barrels" will "WALK" when warm?
|
You'll get some stringing when the barrel gets hot, but not enough to be of any concern. You'll still be well within minute of man.
Part of the hunting that I do is turning small fury vermin into small fury blobs of goo so it needs to be accurate as well I would hate to go from a 3/4" rifle to a new barrel that does 2"
|
HIT THE GYM
I also want to install a very efficient muzzle brake to keep muzzle climb to a minimum. If anyone can suggest some accurate barrels that weigh less than the RRA 16" I would appreciate it.
|
I dont know anything about muzzle brakes, never had a use for them

I dont see how any of the intended purposes would be too taxing for a 16" barrel. It seems to me, you should save your money and hit the gym if its too heavy. Its only a 16" barrel. Really, its not that heavy unless you have some medical condition.
If you want to spend money to modify a barrel that shoots great, you can contour or flute it, but you'll only be saving about 4-6oz, and the harmonics will be different and it will not shoot the same.
