which would you choose?

i have read several threads on the Nov bbls and got confused on the benifits of the poly cuts

1. in a nut shell are the benifits(increased life increased velocity) really noticable?

the mike rock has already been proven in the accuracy department

2. would the nov poly cut bbl be just as mechaniclly accurate?

from the other thread on the 10.5 NOV bbl
55gr (hot)
2680 avg

from another person reg 10.5 bbl
55 gr mil ball
2350 avg

how much vel would it add on a 16" bbl?

You dont need extreme accuracy with an SBR. MOA at 100 yards for 14000 rounds is plenty accurate. You are also talking a barrel that is like $500-600. I do not buy the 300 fps boost it is more than likely in the 50 fps range but SBR needs all it can get.

In talking with others more knowledgable than I about the poly rifling, I've been told that to see a major increase in velocity you need to shoot hotter ammo. The poly rifling decreases friction and pressure but isn't going to give a major boost in velocity with the same ammo. Probably for a 10.5 I'd go with the standard Rock barrel.

Ok so it will add about 50 fps in the velocity section, what about the accuracy/bbl life section

btw i am think about the 16.5" bbl not the 10.5

Just throwing in my experience with Mike Rock barrels. I have [2] 24" .308 5R barrels and they both average 150fps faster than the Remington factory 24" tubes with Federal 168 GMM, this is at 75 degrees and the chronograph set at 15' from the muzzle [I am running 2720 fps with this load]. I have not fired my 18" Mike Rock SPR barrel through a chronograph so I don't know what it is running, but it sure is easier to clean than a factory barrel. He has both cut rifled and button rifled AR blanks, buttoned runs around $270 chambered and cut rifled about $425 chambered.

Duh...guess I could have read the entire post eh?

You'll probably see some increased barrel life, if properly cleaned. Keep in mind that they are harder to clean properly because patches, brushes, don't naturally follow the rifling the way a standard barrel does. All things being equal a poly barrel will have longer life, but I can't quantify that as I've got little long term experience with them. If you call John, he's a heck of a nice guy and would be happy to give you the "tour" so to speak.

i just want to do it right the first time before i lay down 500-600 big ones on a bbl

I think I read somewhere the longer barrels do better with 5R but shorter do better with conventional rifling. Or did I remember wrong? I would not get polygonal rifling if I wanted the very best accuracy. Plus conventional rifling saves a boat load of money over the 5R or poly rifling option.

According to twl, an ABS carbon fiber wrapped barrel using John Noveske's Pac-Nor polygonal rifled blanks does not cost a whole lot more than an ABS carbon fiber wrapped barrel using a standard Mike Rock blank.

When in doubt, ask John Noveske or twl.

Most of the standard ABS barrels use a standard Rock blank, not the 5R. They do offer 5R barrels, the 6.8 and .308 barrels I have on order are 5Rs.

I've got Noveske barrels in stock too, just been waiting on LaRue forends that got here today. Yippee
