A1 upper, or stock? I'm working on going with a A1 stock with an A2 upper/M4 bbl.

I always thought the A1 upper kind of leant itself to the ultralight barrel myself.

I agree, lighter is better. I prefer the A1, and would have gone with that had I found one used. I used to have a CAR15 SP1, and I thought that was just about ideal in weight for an AR.

If I could find a 14.5" Id be all over that.

Have Kurt or Adco cut it down?  I don't think it's all that terribly expensive.
Do you have an SBR or are you permanently attaching a FS?

I remember seeing a AF pic of a well worn one a while back.  The upper didn't have FA.

How about an A1 upper with a free-floating rail system?

I've never seen such an animal.

I'm surprised the iron sight only crowd hasn’t popped up with one?

I've got an M4/A1 set up on order as we type.

I think it's the shiznit.  Once you set the irons....they'll always be set. It'd be a chore to mess up the alignment

I think that would be a neat setup.  Would the A1 upper have to have cuts made in the upper to match up w/ the M4 barrel extension?  Or would it function fine with the extension ramps terminating at the lip?

I am currently building a A2 M4 upper with KAC MRE and either a chrome lined gov't/ ltweight barrel or M4 barrel.  I'm gonna put a PRI fatboy gas tube in too.

I'm not sure if Kiesler's Police Supply in IN is still around. In 2000, 2001 they bought a lot of Bushmaster product, A1(C7) uppers, 16 inch barrels, with pinned on Mini-blasters. They were equipped with the A2 stock. Sometime later, they had the 14.5 inch M4 barrel , but with the perm. attached AK blaster. Bought two of the M-4 mini-Y's for $615 new. Must have been the leftovers from YK2? One of them has a Barney coloring.

I saw a pic of a basic carbine with this combo a LONG time ago...

I installed one of CMMG's 1/7 M4 barrels on an M16A1 upper from CDNN.  One SWEET combo, total weight is under 7#'s with the old style M16 stock(no storage).  Kind of like an updated Model 655.  HTH.

Lumpy - Not exactly what you are looking for but I wanted the same thing but wanted the flexability of the flattop upper:

I do!!!  I've had this carbine since 1999 (my first 5.56 uppered AR).

Here is an old picture

It's getting an M4 telestock.  I've changed the foward grip (to an AAC), light mount is now a TDI, and the Reflex is gone (no optic on her right now).

Its my loaner/ KISS rig.

Damn Marc, that turned out great.

Thanks everyone.  Tman, thx for reminding me about the Isayeret website.  I forgot about this:

Thank you sir!  That picture you just posted along with one KevinB posted is what gave me the idea for a 14.5" M4 barrel with a A1 handle.  Kevin's picture with the detachable carry handle sealed the deal!

The only factory 14.5" pencil barrel I've ever run across was a used Colt 1:12.
I picked it up anyways and put it on a semi-dedicated .22 upper for plinking.

Not really an A1 upper, but pretty close.  Love the gun and like the balance with the M4 barrel.

I found an original Colt 14.5 inch 1/7 LW barrel at a local gun show a few years back. I have seen them every now and then at the larger shows. I wanted a second one and did not want to hunt around so I bought a 16" Colt 1/7 and had KKF cut it down to 14.5 and install a Vortex on the end. Here are some pics

Her are some pics of just the barrel.

I have an A1M4 that I put together a few years ago.  It has a KKF brake and an original M16 stock.  Now that the AWB is gone I am going to make a few changes.  I am going to put on a YHM lightweight FFT and replace the brake with a phantom.  I thought about switching to a flattop upper, but I decided I really like the rugged simplicity of the A1.  If I decide to mount an aimpoint or an eotech I will just mount it to the free float tube.  I am still trying to decide if I want a collapsible stock or not.  Decisions, Decisions.

Lumpy

I like the gun a lot, it just "feels" right.  Just FYI, it's an M16 upper(small hole), not an SP1.  The lower is a Sendra, which was made to the older A1 spec.  The other thing I did on this was to go with the older carbine handguards (Colt, all the rest suck).  They fit better than the M4's for the "slim and trim" profile I was going for.  The ACOG is only there because my eyes aren't what they used to be.

Good luck with the build.

I probably got the original photo on here somewhere, it's an Air Force FAC's GAU-5 of some sort IIRC.  Not free-floated though, but the A1/M16 upper would make a heck of a BUIS

I have that same pic on my drive too, and I even cropped it actually the same (strange)! But like you said, it's not a FF Tube.

I made one also.

Used a Colt lower(sbr), original tele-stock, Plastic.
Colt slab-side upper and a Bushie 14.5 inch bbl.
Neither the barrel or reciever have the M4 feed ramps so they go together perfect.
The rifle weighs @ 6.5 pounds....Perfect.

Lumpy,

Saw a post ban Bushmaster on the EE last week (I think) that had an A1 upper and M4 barrel with mini-y-comp - you may be able to do a search and find it - not much for ADCO or some other quality smith to remove the Y comp and install a phantom for you.
