Personally I wouldn't go with anything less than a 1/8 (no 1/9 - 1/12) twist. I like the ability to shoot the heavier bullets.

The only reasons to buy a 14.5" is if you want to mount a bayonet or maintain the "milspec" look. You still have to permanently attach a muzzle device to bring the OAL to 16" and that complicates maintenance and repair down the line.
The twist is your call, depends on what length bullets you want to shoot. Of the three parts houses you listed I'd go with BFI. |

16" better velocity. The 14.5 will have something on the end anyway so it'll be the same length. J&T has a deal going on the EE for some chrome lined pre-ban uppers, but I don't remember if they were 16 or 14.5

If its going to be preban configuration I would go Bushmaster 14.5" 1/7
It it will be post ban I would go with a full 16" barrel, prbably still Bushmaster. You do know that you can buy a $100 complete upper reciever from the EE and mail it to Bushmaster when you buy the barrel and they will put the barrel on your upper free of charge right? Thats under $300 for a brand new factory assembled Bushmaster upper (minus guts). Then someone has complete bolt/boltcarrier factory COLT sets for under $100. I wish I could remember who that was... |

I was not aware that Bushmaster would install a barrel free of charge. Any idea what sort of turnaround time on something like that? Also, why the difference for pre or post ban? Part of my thinking was that if I picked up the 14.5" barrel, if the ban sunsets next September I could add a Vortex of Phantom flash hider to the barrel. |

1:9 will *reliably* stabilize bullets up to 72gr.
Beyond that, you'll need a tighter twist rate (1:8 or 1:7). -Troy |

Even the 75 gr. shoots well in some bbl.s Problem is you won't know if it will till you shoot it. |

Troy, the Bushy 1/9 14.5" barrels that we use reliably stabilize the 73 grain Bergers out to at least 100M... While the fragmentation isn't quite as good as the 77 OTMs, it's a sight ahead of M193.

I understand, but remember that if I tell someone that they can *reliably* stabilize a round, and it isn't stabile on a 0F day at sea level at 600 yards, then people are gonna be pissed (at me).
Yes, there will always be some variation, and altitude, temperature, and other environmental variables affect the ultimate outcome. I can only post a guideline. -Troy |
