Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake but I've started seeing mention of mid-length handguards from some manufacturers and I'm not sure I get it. What's the purpose? Does it have something to do with proper location of a bayo lug on a 16" barrel?

Cosmetic.

Short handguards, designed originally for the 10" bbl XM177E1 and carried over to the 14.5" bbl M4 look dorky on 16" barrels.  Moving the front sight out so the barrel looks better requires "mid length" handguards.

18" bbl, which offers nothing a 20" doesn't, can use them as well.

MSTN, don't forget if free floating isn't necessary, you can just use the Armalite or Cav Arms or other medium length handguards. Plus custom cut free floating tubes and maybe the FIRSH.

I'm not sure what you were saying in your post was meant to reflect that or not.

Obviously if they bought the gun from Armalite, they probably would already have those handguards...

Just shoot me if I'm not making sense.

Wes, when was the last time Knights made a "Medium Long" FFRAS?

Wes, that's why you use a KAC low-profile gasblock and RAS front BUIS ;-) Does Daniel Defense make one the same as the KAC Mid-Long? I like the idea of the Aluminum barrel nut for some odd reason...

Thanks for the info...should've known the gas system had something to do with it. I agree that CAR-length handguards look dorky on a 16" barrel.

Does KAC still make medium-short?

JScott, I've wondered the same thing.

Does anyone know if the medium short FF RAS (KAC part number 991687) is still produced or available?

Thanks

I have a Rock-river 16" that has the mid-length gas system.

This was a "special build" which has a full bull barrel behind the gas block and Hbar in front.

It came with a DPMS-style float tube.  I replaced it with the Armalite mid-length green fiberglass float tube.

Wouldn't the medium length handguards have less of heat problem than the shorty?

Plus you get a slightly longer sight radius for irons.

FYI, Armalite is going to be releasing a RAS for midlength configs at the end of October. You can see a CAD pic of it on their site under New Products. I spoke with a sales rep today and he informed me that one RAS will fit either the AR-15 OR the AR-10. One rail will be slightly taller than the other so that all the user need do is flip it around to match whatever their receiver height is. I don't know how this will affect attachments on the bottom of the taller rail, although I doubt it's a huge difference.

Personally, I think 'end of October' is too long! [:)]

Are you saying there is no advantage to a mid-length system other than it looks better?  I was getting ready to build a mid-length RRA with an ARMS#58 for my next projecct but you just saved me a thousand dollars, thank you!!!  For some reason I was under the impression they had some advantage over the carbine.  I guess you learn something new everyday [:D]

Chuck is FOS. Read the two threads linked above for the real scoop. It's more than just cosmetic.
