I'm curious as to what kind of accuracy the RRA Varmint upper is capable of. Also, what would a complete rifle with, say, an 18" upper weigh? Anyone? TIA.

Dont know on the weight part, but on the accuracy:

From their page, it says 9 lbs.

I have an 18" upper and that thing is HEAVY.  The package weighed right at 7 lbs just for the upper.  Don't have the lower yet, so I can't say anything about accuracy.  Here's what I have so far.

Thanks FAL. I'd be very happy with your 77 grain 5/8" groups!

Anyone else have an RRA upper?

Chris, to bad you don't live close to me. We'd have to put your top end on one of my lowers and give it a test spin!

Unfortunately, 9 lbs without a scope/mount is a bit heavy for my tastes. I'd like to find a free floated upper with an HBAR 1x8 stainless match barrel (fluted would be great, IMO).

I have a 16" Varmint from RRA. MOA is easy with the heavier bullets. The rifle shoots better than I do.

One of my shooting buddies has a RRA varmint upper. Can't remember if it is 20" or 24". I have shot it side by side with my Bushie Varminter.

We each have the same glass (Leupold 6-18x40 target). His is on a Bushie DCM lower. We each shoot handloads. So far the Varminter is the accuracy champ. I have a number of half-inch 100 yd groups, a couple a bit better. The RRA has never done this well, although it is occasionally under MOA. I shoot mine with a Harris bipod; Doug uses a versapod (which I DON'T like). I wonder if the VersaPod is partially to blame, as it isn't as steady as the Harris bipod-at least with me behind it.

I also know that he has tried a lot more bullet/powder combos in search of an accurate load for the RRA. The Varminter liked my first attempts, especially 69gr BTHPM. Doug actually mentioned he might sell his RRA and get a Varminter upper. YMMV.

Oh yeah, the RRA upper is noticeably heavier than the Varminter. The fluting makes a lot of difference.
