Most precision AR15 target rifles have 24" or 26" barrels. However, the DCM rifles have 20" barrels. There is a velocity advantage to the longer barrel, but probably not an accuracy advantage. If you want to shoot heavy bullets, you'll want a 1/7-1/8 twist rate. 1/7.7 seems to be common as well.
If you see yourself humping around in the field, there is a distinct advantage to the shorter and lighter weight barrel. But if you're not, and don't plan to use the rifle in competition that requires a 20" barrel, 24" is a good choice. BTW, I think guys are shooting out to 600 yards with 20" barrels, so the loss of 4" does not seem to cause a problem. |

Given that this is a "precision" rifle that will spend it's life on a rest, go ahead and get a 24" and take advantage of the extra velocity. That velocity both increases your effective range and helps maintain a flatter trajectory (compared to a shorter barrel to the same distance), making range estimation easier.
Obviously, for a rifle that you were going to carry around a lot, 24" would be too much barrel (and WEIGHT!), but for a bench gun, it's exactly what you want. The DCM rifle is 20" because it must look like the standard US service rifle. It's an artificial limitation, so unless you plan to compete in Service Rifle (which puts additional restrictions on your rifle), don't worry about it. -Troy |
