I have a dissipator barrel and need some building ideas. I have an A2 upper and a flat-top upper. Which one would you use? I'm building a just for fun gun that may do double duty as a home defense rifle.
Any suggestions? Pics would be appreciated if you've got a dissipator. The barrel is a Bushmaster. It was a HBAR until KKF did a light weight conversion on it and added an A3 brake. |

Here's mine, before it grew an M4 barrel:

I wonder how long it's gonna take before someone trashes the dissy setup and touts the mid-length...it seems to happen in every dissy thread. I for one love the dissy, can't beat the combo of a full-sight radius with the compactness of a 16". Nice dissies you guys!
|
|
Well I am leaning toward a flat-top. Haven't decided on sights or optics yet. I do like the way the thing looks, and the light weight is really a plus.

Home defense / fun gun....I'd throw it on the A2 upper and take advantage of the longer sight radius....For waking up in the middle of the night and defending the house I would go with irons....Just my 2 pesos ;)

here it is with a Litton M845 night vision scope;;;

Very nice. Any issues with fitting the FF RAS over the dissy gas block?
|
|
i had to radius the top of the shaved gas block a little but that was it.
i may build another one with an ARMS SIR 59M when wes gets one in. |
|
I just found an old email from Wes at MSTN. I guess KAC makes a low profile gas block that will do the trick. I don't have a part number.
|
|
I bought the low profile SS KAC gas block. (Now I have my fingers crossed so when it gets here the taper pins will fit in the holes in my KAC gas block.) [Not the best plan but a plan nonetheless.]
I am going to do a FF RAS like the one pictured above (only with a PRI post). Nice setup MrH (I decided that the 16in with A2 sight radius is the best idea out there right now). |
|
i talked with Wes about that but i think those KAC blocks use set screws and i don't care for that, especially when it's stuck under a FF RAS! thats alot of work to re-tighten a loose screw.
|
|
My only thought about the KAC block was, will it fit my Bushmaster barrel?
But if a mod to the existing block will work, then perhaps that's the best way to do it. |

I hear and obey..... (if my checkbook would only let me - it is the higher power here)
Anybody else have dissy pictures to share? |
|
I am just starting to build a Dissy upper as well as an all-purpose rifle.
I have an RRA FT Upper that's begging for a Bushy Dissy barrel. The question is, do I want a Heavy Barrel or the M4 profile? What's the balance/weight like? Any recommendations for handguards? |
|
The 16" HBAR barrel is heavier than the M16A2 and the Dissipator heavier still! Have the barrel turned to M16A2 profile and it'll be a very handy weight, no more than the M4.
I had one done a couple of years ago by Kurt Wala. In fact I had the barrel drop shipped directly to him rather than to me etc. Email for a pic, I can't find a way to post one. -- Chuck |

Hawkeye, Nice setup!
I saw your post earlier with all of the pics. You used a Heavy Barrel, correct? How's the balance of your rifle? |

Just one more of it in action in last weekends monthly FDCC shoot.

The barrel I got started out as an HBAR. Then the original owner had KKF do a light weight conversion on it and put on an A3 brake. It is very light with the original A2 handguards or the Cav Arms non-taper handguard on it. Its on a flat-top upper and wearing a removable handle until I work out the sight options. |

Posted in another thread. I use a BMAS full length hand guard. BMAS 3 rail gas block with removable sight. Ace skeleton stock. Bushmaster National Match trigger in a Eagle arms lower.
Barrel was a Bushmaster wish I got it flute. I use an ACOG or I put the detachable handle on it. Hope to finish the BMAS this week. I messed the BMAS barrel nut up and waiting for Bushmaster to send me another. It was my fault for being in a hurry. |

Hawkeye, I plan on a build similar to yours (Bushy A3 dissipator upper + ARMS #59M). Do you have any advice for me? How would an EOTech 552 work on this setup?
|
|
EOTech would work fine. The #59 is bi-level, so you can mount it on the lower rail in the forward position and be set. No advice, just check out everything and put it together to suit your taste's and needs. Some people like the lightweight barrels, I prefer the full heavy. Etc..
|
|
Yea, I'm like you in that the heavy barrel doesn't concern me too much, since I'm a well built guy. I am thinking about getting the fluted version, instead of the normal heavy barrel, but the extra money and lead time makes me pause..... (I want it now, durned it!)
Anyway, I looked at your thread here, and have to say, very nice! I am going to use a single point sling (wilderness & GGGAZ mount) and the ACE skeleton stock, and use EOTech (at first), but otherwise, will be pretty much the same rifle. Now I know what it will look like! |

NEWSFLASH!
I just bought a fluted A2 dissipator with an AK brake. Put a Hogue grip and a gapper on it. She'll stay just like that too...love that setup. Simple and wicked! H |

Let's see if this photo works:
Lightweight Dissipator bbl. My preferred M16 grip and stock (vs. M16A2). -- Chuck |

Lancelot,
sorry it took me so long to get back. the balance w/ the FF RAS and the collapsing stock ia a little far forward. not a horrible amount but noticable. i actually put the A1 stock this weekend. it helps bring balance into the rifle and smooths out the cycling of the bolt. i like the full stock for scope shooting anyway. the CAR15 stock sure looks cool but does nothing for shootability. |
|
Thanks mr_h
Chuck, how do you like the optics you have on there? FWIW Both my rifles now wear A1 stocks and one is now wearing an A1 pistol grip. The more I use it the more I like it. |
