How to identify a Colt upper and specific model number?

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How to identify a Colt upper and specific model number?

I just traded for a couple of Colt's 16" A3 M4 profile uppers. The guy told me they were 6920s (1:9). Not knowing Colts at all, I didn't realize that 6920s are all 1:7s.

So, to double check, if they are exactly like 6920s but with 1:9 barrels, what model number are they? Also, what are the cartushes or proof marks that will prove they are Colts? On the left side of both uppers are a "C" and a stylized "AF." On the front sight base, right side, there's a "C 99 circle RI 1" and the other is "....2".

Colt did make a limited number of 1/9 16" M4 uppers, the 6922 I think was the nomenclature. Forge marks vary, but pretty much every Colt upper will either have a raided "C" or a stmaped "C." There's a tacked thread in the Retro Forum that shows some various carbine barrel markings, and I'm pretty sure you can find some pics of recent Colt 6920 barrel markigns in one of the Colt Industry Forum picture threads.

Here's what the guy I got them from has told me about them:

"They are in fact early "Colt Firearms Division" 6920 uppers with the 1:9 "police twist" - I made the same observation you did and I verified it twice when I took their factory armorer class in 2005 and 2008 with different instructors. Only when "Colt Defense" was created did they starting making everything mil-spec (to save money) with the 1:7 twist."

So there you go. There are some 1:9 6920s out there.

6922s, as already mentioned. The uppers and barrels were available in the 90s. They were actually much more common than the 1/7 twist barrels at that time. I've owned several of the barrels, and still have a couple.
