All of my rifles are 1/7, except for one that's 1/8. more flexibility that way.

I'm in the same boat as jcrowl, except that four of mine are 1/9.
As far as 1/9 and heavy (75gr) bullets go, some 1/9 barrels will stabilize them just fine-and some of them won't. If you think you are going to want to use heavier defensive OTM rounds like Hornady 75gr TAP for example, a 1/7 barrel would be a sure bet. If you're going to stick to 69gr and lighter, a 1/9 would suit you just fine. For this reason I prefer 1/7 barrels, particularly in my defensive carbines. A 1/7 barrel will work fine with 55gr ammo like XM193, but will also stabilize the heavier defensive rounds. A 1/7 barrel becomes marginal for 52gr and lighter varmint type bullets, but that's not a problem for me as I tend to favor heavier versus lighter. A 1/7 barrel with a light bullet is kind of like a 1/9 barrel with a heavy bullet-some of them work and some of them don't. |

I like my 1in7 so far. Haven't been out much though. I only bought it because JT was out of 1/9 twist M4s at the Indy 1500. It was grab this or wait a LONG mail order time. I definitely made the good choice! I like 1/9 or 1/8 for the long barrels, but 16 and less will all be 1/7 from now on.

If you have the option, I would definatley go with the 1:7

I would go with the 1 in 7 it works better for heavy bullets.

1/7 always..........I have shot anything from 55 to 75 in mine and groups are VERY tight. I will never own a 1/9 again

Most users hyperventilate about getting a 1:7. then shoot 55 grain bullets all the time.

Does anyone know of a 16" 1:8 threaded HBAR (pref blackened)?
Or even a 1:7? I just don't like the M4/CAR profile … having a Bull threaded just seems wrong. |

Personally, I don't think it matters whether 95% (98%???) of civilian AR owners have 1/9 or 1/7 twist. For most people it is much ado about nothing, if you are shooting 55gr. range ammo at 50/100 meter targets.
It matters more whether you have a good barrel/bolt by a reputable maker and have taken care of it, than whether you have 1/7 or 1/9 twist. |

But I don't think I've ever shot anything heavier than 62 grains. and 99% of what I shoot is 55 grains. Will you die without it? No. But... It sure is nice to be able to use the heavy bullets, if you ever want to. If you have the option, no reason to close doors. |
