Saw an Olympic Arms carbon 15 in local gunshop,
Was interested but never heard of the manufacturer, Any proud owners? |
This a joke thread right?
Carbon fiber Oly? OK...it's funny I would rather buy ANYTHING other than OLY or Vulcan...especially Carbon fiber stuff from either maker. That's like buying plastic drill bits, or paper helmets. |
One way an Olympic could be worse would be to be a carbon Olympic.

For the same money, there are much better options out there.
The carbon-series rifles and pistols from Olympic are notoriously out of spec. Be careful. ETA: If you're in the market for a lightweight carbine or rifle, Cav Arms would be worth looking at. |

They are the crappiest of the crappiest. Don't even say their name unless you are referencing the world-wide games that take place every four years.
I think every one should own one. Just so they know what good quality isn't. I have one that the only part that left is the lower reciever and even that has another manufactures parts kit now.
edited 'cause I can't spell or write. |
So, you think Vulcan/ Hesse is better??? |

Oly used to be an advertiser on this site, but they left in a huft. They later poked fun at Goatboy(juan) on their website. That was very unprofessional. The Avila's are good people, and personally I don't think they deserved the criticism.

OK, I'll say it. I've got an Oly K3B CAR. The thing runs like a champ. Given my personal experience with this one, I'd buy another Oly without hesitation.
I don't know about their customer service, since I've never had to use it. |
Just curious... What's the round count on yours? |
This is how you spend your first post? |

Back in the ban days I had two olympics, mainly because that is what I could find. The first one had a lot of rounds through it when I bought it and I put a lot around through it. Wolf for the most part. The second one was a re-serialized lower which I put a bushmaster m4gery upper on. So I only have experience with one complete gun but it functioned fine. I have some respect for Olympic because they were re-serializing lowers in the ban days when no one else was, to my knowledge. I have looked at a few at the local gun shops just to look over quality, I would never buy one now that I have options. From what I have seen fit and finish is worse than it was in the ban days.

After looking at this, I am really glad someone helped me decide on a RR and not an olympic arms. Had actually seriously considered an olympic arms rifle when I first started looking for an AR, but asked a lot of questions.
I have a couple and they are fine.
I will say I wrote an email question to them and copied two different people on it. I got completely different answers from them, so I called to get the correct information. I have their Prototype 6.8SPC in 20", that's what I wrote to them about, I aksed if it could handle the Hot Combat loads, the first reply I got said yes you can no problem. Then the 2nd guy answered and said no I could not, so I called him an he explained. I told him what the first guy said and he told me the 1st guy was in sales and should not have answered a technical question. I do know they have had some quality issues in the past that they are still paying for. That translates into a cheaper price for the consumer today. |

every kid wants a pony ((((((((( COLT )))))))))) !!!!!!!!!!! |

Everyone who loves lympic is from Washington State. Something in the water or Tom Spitballer's troll accounts? |
there are better quality ARs out there--oly is not the worst, but not my 1st choice
I have an Oly-Arms Plinker-plus, put aprox 4k of wolf thru it without a problem. I've used an old usgi a1 barrel for the last 1k or rounds, but I'm still using the old upper it came with. Some parts are kinda rough in finish, but I knew that going in. I'd buy something higher quality if you intend to use it for more than range use though (like self defense/etc). Not bad for somebody on a budget who isn't familiar/intrested in putting together a rifle.

This is what I have as well and it is a great rifle ETA: By great rifle I mean that with more than 10,000 rounds down pipe I have not had one FTF or FTE. I can also shoot around a 2ish inch group at 100 yards with the irons. YMMV |

You should expect to get 7500rds through most manufacturer's ARs. I have witnessed at least three Oly rifles that didn't make it through one mag. Their cast lowers are better off used as paperweights as they are impossible to assemble without some major anodizing surgery to make up for Oly's inability to drill a hole straight through the reciever. Customer service? They'd do much better if they communicated with their customers, instead of taking credit card payments on items they don't have in stock and not advising the customers of this status until a month later when the customer calls to ask WTF? Happened to me twice. |

you may be right about their cast recievers, but they haven't made them in years. too many repeat what they have heard. not actually having used one. i have bought 2 plinkers from them in the last year and a half. both function fine, are very accurate, and really quite a bargain at 499 bucks. what do you want for 499 bucks, NEW. a rubber bisquit? one of mine has excellent finish, the 2nd had small pitts or pecks or whatever in the parkerizing, no big deal. i did'nt bitch because i feel i got more than i paid for. but around here, i don't suppose they will ever get a fair shake. i also own a bushmaster and a FN/DPMS, and all the know it all exerts will tell you if you own FN anything, its stolen or junk. BULL. take what you read on these boards with a grain of salt and make up your own mind. my first AR, A colt CAR15 bought new in 76, was no better than any AR i've owned since.

A buddy of mine picked up an Oly carbon 15 several years back and couldn't get more than 3 rounds to fire without a jam. He took it back to the shop he bought it at and they shipped it back to Oly, who kept it for months. When it came back, nothing had changed and there was no indication they'd done a damn thing to fix it. The gun was useless. He eventually tried to return it at the shop, which was also the only range he'd ever fired it at, and they said "no returns, but we'll give you a trade in". They gave him a 50% trade in value on a gun that had less than 50 rounds through it because it was "defective". Everyone knew it was defective, just nobody cared. He got a Bushmaster and now refuses to discuss the carbon-15 incident. |

Olympic never made the Carbon 15 rifles |
Olys are a good buy for the money, but near the bottom of the quality compared to many of the others. I especially like the Armalite ARs now!
I don't care much for Olympics complete rifles but their stainless ultramatch barrels are nice for accuracy.
I was disappointed with their customer service....or should I say lack of customer service.
That's what I would be interested in but there is massive confusion about the price. |
From the barrel makers I've talked to, many have said the ultramatch barrels are rough as hell and need to be lapped at the factory before the chamber ic cut. There are too many good barrels to choose from to get stuck with an oly barrel.

I have a complete Olympic 16" lightweight that I have been very happy with. No malfunctions at all and it's very accurate. I also have a seperate 16" Olympic upper that has also been very good.
Having said that, I feel my Rock River is a better Rifle. It's as accurate as the seperate upper, but chrome lined. It seems put together better - little things like the square A2 type front site post instead of the round style front site post. I wouldn't steer you away from Olympic, but judging from the negative comments that always come up in these threads, you may want to buy a rifle that you know works well - such as from a trusted friend that you know isn't just getting rid of a problem. -K |
