After reading up on the oracle, I was just wondering how much SHTF ammo most people keep on hand, what  type and how do you store it? Do you rotate it, i.e. useing it at the range and replaceing it with new ammo?

For 5.56 I keep about 2k of either XM193 or Q3131A. Also I have a couple of mags of 75grn TAP that I keep loaded for the home.  I usually buy whatever I need before I go shoot.

ETA: Thats for 2 rifles.  I also have 30, 30 round mags, and a couple of 20's.

Compared to many others here I don't have nearly enough.  I have about 700rds of XM193, 150rds of TAP barrier and 200rds of M855.  I wanted the Xm193 for all around use, the barrier for if I have to shoot through something and M855 for just because

I keep a minumum of 3k shtf and 1k of plinking rounds. My goal is to make My stash grow at least 2k a year. I would have a lot more but I like shooting mil-spec over Wolf.

I personally don't believe that I'll ever need more ammo than I can carry on my person.  So I guess that's maybe 10-12 30rnd mags.  That means my stash is pathetic compared to many others on here.  I keep an ammo can of ~500 LC XM193 in my car, which I use at the range and which I keep filled to that level.  I have 3 unopened cases of boxed LC XM193 at home and some loose M855 loaded into 5 mags that I never touch.

Although, with no relief in sight for boxed XM193 and M855, I don't think my stash is going to last long.  I guess I can always go with WOLF for range use.

I'll stop buying when my stockpiles for storage hit 10k.  I have about 7k to go.

As much SHTF ammo as you can afford.  Find some plinking ammo that you can live with and keep your 5.56 for hard times...

At least I have more SHTF ammo than one person...

True SHTF ammo is any known reliable ammo you can get your damn hands on.  If it comes down to it I'll be tickled shitless to have Winchester White Box.

If I learned one thing in life that is this, buy as much ammo as you can afford.

I go by what Fred preaches
If buy a 1,000 rounds, keep 500 for practice and the other 500 for when it is needed
Keep doing it like this and in no time you will have a nice sized ammo stash

Since the  mil surp 7.62 seems to be drying up I have been trying to buy a couple cases of SA each gun show so my 5.56/.223 stash has been a little neglected. I have 1k Q3131 about 6k HSM .223 and 1k Win .223 hp.

Wow, I don't have nearly as much as you guys. I have 4 30 round mags of q3131A and Q3131.  I need to get more.

If I'm lucky, I've got 50 years left, so at 2K per year, I will shoot 100K of 5.56 before I die.  Looks like I have a long way to go before I can stop buying ammo.  And that is just the 5.56.  I don't even want to start thinking aout how much more 45, 9mm, 22lr, and 300WM I still need.

SHTF or no SHTF, it will probably not get any cheaper than it is right now.

Hey!

It hasn't been said yet so. . . . . .drum roll please. . . .

87,000 rounds

Thank you, thank you.  I'm here all week.  Three drink minimum.

Seriously, get what you can afford.  Buy quality.  You will sleep better no matter the quantity.

Specifics?  OK.  1,000 rnds of Mil Spec or Blackhills remanufactured.  If you need more than that for SHTF then you need a lot more resources than that.

As stated previously by several sage members, there is put away ammo and there is plinking ammo.  Don't get 'em confused.

Keeping multiple ARs with both irons and scopes sighted in at ranges from 25 yards to 600 yards easily burns up several thousand rounds a year.

I figure 1000 rds per year minimum for sighting in purposes per rifle. If I do monthly rifle matches that adds another 2000 rounds per year. So 3000 rounds per year per person just to keep a SHTF rifle and shooter ready to go.

I know some people say 1000 rounds is more than you will ever need if the SHTF, but those people never visit the range, never sight in their rifles, never shoot in competitions, and will never survive a gunfight, so 1000 rounds seems like a lot to them.

A practical starting point is to stock a two year supply for all your rifle shooters. That way you still have a years supply left after a year of practicing.

Remember, 3000rds is only 250rds per month.

You need more practice if it takes you 1,000 rounds to sight in your rifles.

600  x 20 rds each = 200 rds x 2 (to include a scope as well) =400 rds

So 400 rds for a basic sighting in with both irons and scope at all the usual ranges, if you can keep it to 20 rounds at each distance.

If you check the zero at different temps throughout the year you will easily shoot up the rest. This is only 83rds per month after all.

Whoa.  That's a lot of sighting in!!!  A range trip with you has more zero's than Bill Gates' bank statement.

I keep a minimum of 1000 quality 5.56 rounds (xm193, q3131a), 200 .40 EFMJ, and 500 .22lr.

I try to keep at least 1000 rounds of M193 and equivalent on hand at all times.  I am trying to bump that up to around 2000 right now.

I keep about 2K 5.56 (Q3131 and XM193) and about 500 9mm in my SHTF ammo boxes.  Plus other assorted stuff.  I have about 2000 5.56 and 500 9mm on hand at any given time for practice/training/range fun.

Personally I'm shooting for 10k for each rifle as far as SHTF ammo. I have two ARs and a M1A. Currently I have over 5k of M855 and 1k of LC xm193, this is stockpiled and not for plinking. Now, mind you I have two ARs so I still have a ways to go before I can relax. As far as 308s go I have 4k of good surplus ammo. Most of this ammo is stored in original crates and cases unopened. As far as plinking ammo goes, I generally buy it as needed, when I need some I buy a case, shoot it up then buy some more. When I buy SHTF ammo its good quality ammo I don't skimp. Buy the lower grade for plinking. I guess the reason I'm shooting for so much is that I have two sons I'm going to pass these rifles down to and I want them to enjoy them or put them to some good use in the future if need be. Not sure what the future holds as far as ammo goes, or even guns for that matter. My .02
