How do I make a proper USMC style loop sling?

I've read several guides on how to make a proper USMC style loop sling and this is what I came up with, but i'm not sure if it's correct or not....

Does anyone know where I can buy one of those green cottom USMC standard issue slings they use in boot camp?

DPMS, CMP, CTD, EBAY, etc. you are looking for a "Web Sling". DPMS sells one in black even.

Polypropylene webbing, like $0.15/ft
Nylon slides, cheap

use the discount code "AR15" at checkout for a 5% discount.

For $5 you can probably make half a dozen silent slings. I think they were selling the USGI silent slings at the uniform/equipment store for $10 each.

Fred's M14 Stocks Go to about 3/4 down on that page. Get yourself the 6 pack of slings for $25. Mine were in near mint condition.

That's not going to work as a shooting sling, which is what he wants.

You need one of those green (or black) issued slings to do it the Marine Corps way. undo the part of the sling that is attached to the buttstock. Do what the pics show. Once you have made this turn the loop 1/4 away from you and put your arm in. once your hand is through put your hand between your weapon and the sling. Wrap your hand around the sling until you hand is back to the handguards. the sling J swivel thingy should be on the outside of your arm, and the J should face up. pull it tight.

BTW, the proper military nomenclature for the canvas sling with the clamp keeper is Sling, Rifle, M1. Not related to the M1 rifle, it was just the first sling type-classified after 1936, when the War Department stopped using year of adoption for type designation.

The USMC was still issuing the green web sling to line infantry units when I got out in 2005. They are in the process of adopting some kind of tac-sling now, though.

IIRC, the M16 and M1/M14 web sling are different. One is longer than the other, but I don't remember which.

Just make sure to disconnect that J hook from the rear sling hook! And yeah, in order to do it the Marine way you need the Marine sling.

ETA- I tried this with the black sling that came with my Colt when I first got it. Drove me nuts for a few weeks until I realized I really needed the extra hardware on the sling.

Same here...I haven't had to make a USMC loop since 1977. Or was it requal in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981? Oh well, I needed the refresher anyway. Thanks!

That is the way I remember it in the 1980's.
We had the black M14 slings. IIRC.
