FYI you are not going to get an extra 600-800 fps from a 20" barrel. Whoever told you that is FOS. Going from a 20" barrel to a 16" barrel with M193 you lose 150 fps; going from a 20" to a 14.5" with M855 you only lose 130fps.

Shoot someone in the chest with one 7.62, they will likely die. Same goes for 5.56. Shoot someone in the arm with 7.62, they will likely live. Same goes for 5.56. Shoot someone in the leg with 7.62, they may or may not die, same goes for 5.56. Are you beginning to see a pattern?
Nothing is certain, not even .308. As a matter of fact, 5.56 does MORE tissue damage than 7.62 inside 150 - 200 yrds or so. |

Within it's effective velocity range (over 2700 FPS) it is a devastating round. Out of a 16 inch barrel it's over 2700 fps out to approx 140 yards or so.

Thanks, you are correct. But it's probably even better with soft point I hear- I've heard of soccerball sized wounds in the chest cavity from a single 45gr .223 softpoint. |

FMJ rounds do pretty good but if you ever see what a soft point round does in flesh it is devastating...the "contractors" mostly were carrying soft point rounds or hollow points in their weapons that I came into contact with...
I could not tell a bit of difference between the various barrel lengths...a 100-200fps difference did not have any measurable increase in effectiveness from what I could tell. The Iraqi militants or Taliban outside of Kandahar sure were not any deader between 16" or 20" barrels. |

I was told by a NASA Space Shuttle Ninja Door Gunner(SSNDG) that 5.56x45 is the best, and thats why they use it and so should I ! ! !
