Is there a functional reason the barrels are stainless as opposed to parkerized? A bright stainless barrel sticking out of my upper seems as tactical as blaze orange marpat
Obviously I’m missing something here.  Educate me wise ones!

it's cheaper not to parkerize it, and it doesn't need it either...

that's just a guess though...

There not intended to be used on a battle rifle so they might as well be pretty.

Bead blast it.  It creates a nice tactical gray.

like it was said earlier no need to park a SS barrel

Olympic provides an oxide coating on SS.

In most cases, the bull barrel isn't suited for tactical purposes, anyway.

True... there are a few good platings that work on SS, but phosphating (parkerizing) is not for non-ferous metals, high nickle content alloys, stainless

Ya, I knew you knew that, so I just threw it out there for general info.

Not often you get to say that in context...

Mine was done by Steve at Adco.  Many machine shops/gunsmiths/auto refinishers can do it.  Check your yellow pages.

I like polished stainless barrels........

.223 24" fluted with outer surfaces polished and flutes bead blasted.....

or a .17 Rem with full polish and a nickle plated, chopped gas block ........

If done incorrectly this will make the surface very prone to oxidation.

Apparently the High Power guys have figured out that stainless barrels are a little more accurate and/or last a little longer than chromoly barrels of the same quality.  And on the target range it doesn't matter what color it is.  (It's already been noted you can't park it, and it's already rust resistant.)

How?  And how can you tell if it's done correctly?

Yes, that FSB is a PRI.

And as to the oxidation problem, I have never had an issue and I live in a pretty humid place and right by the ocean.   Wish I could say the same for the screws on that PRI sight.  They surface rust like crazy unless I keep a coat of lube on them.  The bead blasted stainless holds up like a champ.

I too would like to know.
Bead blastic doesn't change the metalergical properties of SS, does it???

I bead blast stainless quite often, but it never seems that dark of a gray, is it just the picture?

Bad photo.....it's a little lighter color in person.

Bead blasting doesn't make it more prone to oxidizing, sandblasting does.  Beadblasting actually closes the pores in the surface metal, kind of like ball peen hammering a piece of sheet metal.  Sandblasting creates cuts in the surface.

I'll buy the difference, but I don't see how that matters on a stainless barrel.

The metal in Stainless barrels a lot closer to regular steel, then say surgical tools. It is too hard to machine a barrel with surgical tool SS.

FYI don't bead blast Stainless barrels with STEEL shot. Potential for rusting.
