Need an upper and am debating between RRA Govt upper w/ surefire rail and BUIS or Bushmaster Dissipator with some custom touches----any thought or opinions greatly appreciated----either will do the job if they go bang----but are either one more prone to feeding or extraction problems?---thanks all

I have been quite pleased with my RRAs. As stated above, you won't go wrong either way.
I have a dissipator and a midlength RRA. The dissy with the original barrel profile is fairly front heavy. If I were going to buy again, I would go for a lighter weight barrel (like an M4 profile).
Both are great! I wouldn't want to make the decision. Buy both!
Both are good, Don't forget to call and check availibility if you want it quick.
RRA is good stuff as far as I have seen. As all have said, both are good, but I, unlike some of the others, would choose Bushmaster over RRA because of Bushmaster's standard chrome lined barrels, 5.56 chambers, and lighter profile barrels.
My RRA has a chrome lined barrel, 5.56 chamber, two stage trigger, and is considerably cheaper than the Bushy. Maybe I got a bad Bushy lower, but the last Bushy I built the mags failed to drop free and the bolt failed to lock open on an empty USGI mag 50% of the time. Not to mention the horrible trigger pull. I sold the Bushy to get the RRA and I'm very pleased with my choice. My .02

I started with a Bushmaster, have owned some RR and also own a Stag.I would recomend you buy within any of these brands without any worry. You are more than likely to buy more than one AR so don't get to fired up about brand.Buy based upon what kind of deal you find local and what features you desire. Keep in mind the EE and dealers you find here are generally going to be cheeper than local stuff .
Just curious, which RRA barrels have 5.56 chambers? |
Everything that isnt a stainless Match barrel is 5.56 and mine came with chrome lined as well. From my understanding, everything that is LAR15 based is 5.56 |

RRA stamps their 5.56 chambered barrels:
N9A: N = 5.56 chamber 9 = 1/9 twist A = Chrome-Moly and NOT chrome lined or N9C: N = NATO 5.56 chamber 9 = 1/9 twist C = Chrome-Moly and Chrome Lined ETA: Their wylde chambered barrels are stamped: W9A: W = Wylde chamber 9 = 1/9 twist A = Chrome-moly and NOT chrome lined Im not sure if they even chamber any in .223? |
I have built several rifles using all RRA parts. For fit, finish and $$$ you cant go wrong. I have been very happy with the comp
No 4150 steel.
No park under the FSB. No 1/7 twist. No............... Oh, wait, wrong argument. RRA's OK. Not my first choice, but definitely not my last. |
I just bought a RRA NM rifle last month and I love it. I've only had it out to the range twice for practice so far, but it's accurate and I haven't had one malfunction of any kind. The finish on it is great and the trigger is nice and crisp.
From what I've seen from mine and others that have them, you can't go wrong with Rock River Arms. Don |
+1 |
What he said. Mines marked N9C. I'm pretty sure its common for RRA. |
I bought a brand new RRA TASC Rifle. I went with the mid-length hand guard and chrome-moly barrel. I bought this rifle in the fall of 2003. I haven't any trouble with it at all! The main reason I went with a RRA was because my friend got it for me at cost plus shipping! At the time RRA's were a little cheaper then Bushy's and the fact that I got it at cost....it was a no brainier! Everything I've ever read or heard was that Bushy and RRA were on par with one another as far as quality go's. I've been hearing really good things about Stag lately!
I don't like the short CAR type hand guards. If I was going to get a Bushy I would either get one with a "rifle upper" (20 inch barrel) or and most likely I would get the "Dissipator". Flip a coin, heads= RRA, tails=Bushy. Good luck! |
I feel so misinformed! Where are the barrels marked and if someone knows, when did that start?
I apologize for the small hijack! |
Usually under the hand guards... |
+1 for RRA. Great rifle in everyway. Best of them all in terms of fit and finish. Hope they start making chrome lined barrels standard, crappy that you have to request it.
RRA M4 Entry Tac LEO
CAL 5.56MM, with chrome lined barrel. LOVE IT! |
Wish they made barrels with 4150 steel and 1 /7 twist Other wise RRA is Excellent ! |
As long as you fellows are talking about RRA, does anyone have any feedback on their Varmint rifle?
That would be a wylde chamber with a heavy stainless 1/8 barrel. Thanks. |
I 'm sold, as I've got the RRA 18" Varminter with 2-stage trigger on order - couple of weeks to go. Going to build-up a SPR with 3.5-10x40 scope.
I've never owned a RRA rifle, but they make some outstanding 1911s. I'd put mine up against the best of the semi-custom manufacturers' offerings any day.
I'm getting a RRA CAR4 Upper from a friend who sells them; they are excellent IMHO; plus unlike BM, RRA uppers come with the fat "Military Type" handguards rather than the skinny handguards BM uses.
I tested the upper with my Semi-Custom Lower (I bought the semi finished lower from him too) and the color match is spot on and the action is butter smooth; can't wait to get the upper and test fire my completed AR. The excitement is killing me. |
Having made Highpower Expert with an out of the box RRA NM A2 (same basic barrel as the varminters), I'd say you will get a hell of a shooter. I made Master last season with the same rifle, except I replace the worn out (by HP standards) original Wilson 1/8 SS match barrel with a nearly identical (except it is a 1/7 and has the evil flash suppressor) Wilson SS from WOA. |
I don't think so. NATO or Wylde. |
Sorry again for the hijack... but I checked the two new Rock River Tactical Entry guns we just recieved last week for the marking, but there is nothing like what you described anywhere I can see on the barrel. The barrel does have 2 markings on it; On the top side under the handguards, near the barrel nut it is marked "202". Just ahead and offest to the left of that, there's a small "1". So how do I know what chambering these guns have. I like to have the correct info on the guns we have, so I am interested to know. I ordered them without chrome lining so I know they are just chrome moly, but what about the chamber? |
They're ALL wylde chambers they safely shoot both 5.56 and .223 |
No, they're not. They offer both Wylde and 5.56 Nato (Wylde only in the 20" barrels, no 5.56 option). WIZZO |
Wow, way to chime in there with all your wisdom. |

I really like BM and RRA but give the edge to BM.
My reasons are: BM 5.56- STD chromelined-STD barrel markings-STD RRA 5.56- not STD but available- you have to know what you're looking at/getting chromelined-not STD but available- you have to know what you're looking at/getting barrel markings-STD but harder to get to* *BM barrel markings are easly found by looking at the barrel, in front of the sight post. RRA barrel markings require moving the handguards and looking under the gas tube. Though not a difficult task for the NINJA/SEALS of ARFCOM, it an be a task newbies/rookies. Probably 90% of the guns/parts I buy, are used. As a result, I deal with private parties. They may not know exactly what they have, or how to identify it. For me, the few variables, the better. I have run BM, RRA and even BM/RRA combos. I have never been let down. As long as it fits MY criteria, I'm happy to own either one, or both. |
DELETED WHAT I WROTE HERE SO I WOULD LOOK LIKE LESS OF A 'TARD. see my post below where I apologize for being incorrect. I'll take WIZZO's word for it 'cause I see him here all the time. but anyway this is about the quality of RRA's rifles and carbines. so my 2 cents is that they're the best deal for the money. Generaly, you get more options standard and better fit and finish for LESS moooolah. I love mine! |
my understanding is that wylde is standard on they're rifles. Mine is the m4 entry tactical. 16" "r4" profile barrel. . . . comes standard with the wylde chamber. Not just the 20 inchers. OHHHHHH I see what you're saying . . . well. If I'm wrong then I'm wrong. My apologies WIZZO. |
Maybe you should check out this web site and see what rifles come standard with wylde chambers. Entry tactical rifles come standard with 5.56 chambers. |

That's odd. I had thought my RRA was chrome lined, and then I see that my barrel has the N9A marking. I'm a newb to ARs, but I thought the shiny silvery finish in the chamber and bore meant chrome lined.... Does chrome moly look like this also? I had thought it would be more grayish. |
I didn't think chrome lined was shiny. More of a dull gray overspray as you look into the muzzle. Very hard to see. I didn't think the chamber had any gray tint to it. Did the salesperson represent it as chrome? If so and it is on the receipt I would be taking it back. However, many here think the chrome-moly is sufficient.
In my excitement I forgot to ask the salesperson if it was chrome lined. When I got home I saw the shiny feed ramps and chamber and thought that meant it was chrome-lined
either way I'll live. just would prefer the chrome lining |
