If it's a true Colt M4 upper (14.5" bbl + A2), then it does make sense.

I want an authentic looking mil spec upper so the vortex and phantom are out. why do i have to permanently attatch it? I didnt think that is necessary on a preban lower.

Is this a quiz?

Ok Dude.

Info.

A rifle with a barrel less than 16" is considered a NFA weapon.

So don't attach your upper and go shooting, until you make the OAL permantly more than 16".

That would make you barrel shorter. Than before

Just stop while you are ahead. Cut your losses, and follow the rules.

You didn't know any better. No harm. Just do the right thing now.

And how does measuring from the back of the bolt help ya determine barrel length?

Man, you've got to study up on this stuff. Ignorance will not be a proper defence if you get busted. If the barrel is under 16 inches you have to permently attach a muzzel device to make it a legal length. Every time someone screws up like that it helps the anti-gun crowds cause.

That's right...everyone knows anything less than 16" is SUPER DEADLY...not just regular deadly. That's why my build has a 15.99999" barrel. Just take a piece of emery cloth and two or three passes will get ya there. Then you can really kill people dead. They're MUCH more deader when shot with the shortened barrel. Kind of like how you can't kill anyone with just 10 rounds...it always takes 11 or more.

cuz if it isn't closed all the way, the rod you stuck down the barrel will go down further giving you a longer lenght. Barrels are measured indirectly by sticking a rod down the muzzle. the face of the bolt stops the rod.

I assumed he was measuring it from the rear end of the upper receiver to the end of the barrel, which made absolutely no sense to me.
