I already own a colt hbar the receiver is stamped 223 nothing is on the barrel to indicate caliber.  I have just read in the forums that 223 & 5.56 are not the same, also found a place on the net saying colt ar's are all chambered in 5.56.  Whats the deal are they 5.56 or 223 or one of the in between chambers.  When I build my future car 15 it will be 5.56 any way but I would like to use the same ammo for the both of them.  Any suggestions? Thanks Mike H.

The external dimensions of the cases are the same, but 5.56 is loaded hotter than .223. If the barrel on your rifle is truly a Colt, it will be marked accordingly. I've never seen an unmarked Colt barrel.

Not to hijack your thread, but I had been wondering about colt barrel markings. Do "HBAR" barrels actually say "HBAR"? I have a colt target match barrel that is marked 556. What is or would be the difference between the two (HABR & Target match) ?

Thanks for input

The Colt I just traded was a Colt Match Target HBAR, and it was stamped "Match Target" on the side, and "HBAR" on the barrel.

Covert8645 & mm34b~

Thanks for your input. I know now that my barrel is not an HBAR.
It is only marked "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7" Where would I find out what the difference is between the two (HABR and TARGET MODEL)?

Thanks again and HAPPY NEW YEAR

Tweak,
Under the FSB is 3/4 and under the handguard is 5/16. I'm guessing a HBAR is thicker under the handguards?

Thanks for the lesson guys.

Damn my eyes! Yes it is actually 5/8 (.625) under the handguard, and 3/4 (.75) under the FSB.

Glad one of us is paying attention.
