I'm currently looking around for a nice AR to add to my collection and I saw a Bushmaster M4 for sale at $800.  I've only had experience with the M16 at Basic Training, so would I be getting a similar experience with a Bushmaster product or should I look somewhere else?  Also, I'm conflicted on whether or not it should be a M16 or M4 style rifle, I'm of small stature and would like something affordable and also easy to handle so that my family can enjoy shooting also.

Go with the carbine if you are looking at something for everyone to shoot.

If you are looking for a carbine, try to find one that is a flattop, and that has a removeable carry handle.  This will allow you to use optics like the military, LE, or all the cool people.  On a serious note, the optics make a good shooter great, and a great shooter fantastic.  Sooner or later, you will want to upgrade, and its easiest and cheapest if you just get the flattop to start.
