Will an A2 buffer tube fit in an A1 stock, and/or vice-versa? What about the spacer?

The buffer tube, buffer and spring are different. The shell and screw are different, and the spacer is used on an A2 but not an A1.

The only difference between an A1 and an A2 is that the A2 stock is longer, so it uses a plastic spacer between the end of the tube and the stock for length and has a longer top butt screw. The tube, buffer, and spring are all the same. So you can interchange an A1 and A2 stock on the same tube. I do it all the time.

only difference is the screw and spacer. If you want to use an A1 stock make sure you have the shorter screw, if not the buffer does not have full range of travel.

So there are 2 totally different answers to the original question here. Which one is the CORRECT answer? That is the new question.

The receiver extension (buffer tube) on the M16/A1/A2/A3/A4 is part number 61574. So yes, they are the same thing.

This is the correct answer. The RECEIVER EXTENSION is the same as is the buffer and spring.

If you're going to install an A1 stock on a rifle with a fixed stock make sure you have the shorter A1 upper screw (Fulton Armory carries these - or you can cut an A2 screw down by 5/8", and don't forget the Loctite)

+1. The buffer tube is the same for both stocks. A1 uses no spacer and a shorter screw, A2 uses the spacer and longer screw. Make sure you use an A1 buttstock screw.
