I did a 7 day search and it didn't turn up anything, so forgive me if this is old news.
RRA announces a .458 SOCOM upper to be available late 2005!  Fantastic! The more momentum we can generate the more commercial loadings we may see. |

Whichever......there are quite a few loads using each. The round was designed based on a 250gr Spitzer IIRC. I've seen loads using 300gr FNHP, 500gr RN, 600gr SP, solids, etc..... |

that .458 socom round looks like it will knock you on your ass hard.
how does the lower look? does it use a mag block or something? I am anti-foreign-caliber when it comes to the AR's but I would build a .458 in a AR though.

Not that bad....hardest loads I've ever fired are a little like 20ga magnums from an O/U.
Standard AR lower, standard UNMODIFIED USGI mags. |

I own a .458 SOCOM not made by
The bullets that I like to shoot are the 300gr JHP's, I tried the 400's and didn't like the round nose and their web sight is wrong, the 400's are slower than what thy state. Pat

Through Cor-Bon the 300's are around $30.50 a box of 20.
I also bought a 50AE at the same time, so I have them both ready to shoot on Eagle Arms Lowers, and boxed up ready to travle too. If some one wants to help me post some pice of each I would be glad to. Pat

Marty originally designed the .458 SOCOM around the 300gr Barnes spitzer, not a 250gr Spitzer.
You will note that the Barnes 300 has the perfect OAL when seated to the base of the case neck. That was not an accident. |

Wait till you see what we are getting ready to beta test .... samples go out tomorrow to NoPlay, BearBait1 and Collins .... Cold will get his later as his need special shipping.
If they work as desired, it opens up all sorts of new avenues ... Then there is that other project, which I am actually hesitant to pull the trigger on.... 535 gr at 1700 fps .... from a 16" carbine .... |

Even if it doesn't penetrate, I doubt you could survive a hit with .458 Socom.

Marty is making the .30 HRT (Herrett Rimless Tactical) which will feed through 6.8 mags. A few notes about actually shooting the .458 Socom: Helpful hint to you guys buying an upper only... you must use an A2 buttstock. The .458 Socom will break the latch on an adjustable stock. Accuracy is good, nice tight groups at 50 and 100 yds. Eotech 552 stood up to the recoil with no problems. Shooting stuff is fun. (Sorry to steal your tagline, Ol' Painless, I could not resist!)  |

Well, I know that a standard stock would work best, but I let a friend with a 458 Socom upper put 10 mags (100 rounds) thru my M16 lower. I have to say, it R E A L L Y kicks much more than the 5.56 or 7.62x39.
I didn't even think about the 6 pos butt stock. Anyway, my cheapo RRA 6 pos lasted without any problems, and it gets really beat with the 7.62x39 diet I flog it with. I have to say, that the 458 isw a real blast to shoot. Only time I had to let off the trigger to keep the muzzle in a safe direction. If ammo gets a little cheaper, maybe I'll even buy one. |

Love to have 1, buuut at 1.50 a shot... that's way to steep.. cost the same as the gun for two days of serious shooting... I hope the ammo goes down in price..

What's the most anyone has actually shot their .458 in a single trip to the range? I've gone through about 50 rounds of 300 grain ammo and my shoulder had it... I think you would almost be on the ground crying if you could shoot $800 worth of .458 ammo. And I LIKE recoil... Spooky |

I would suspect that 80% if not more of the folks shooting the 458 are reloaders who "roll their own". Brass can be had from Midway, load data is available and increasing, and a plethora of bullets available for reloading (see the pic below)  Front row laying down 500 gr RN, 300 gr Barnes X, 400 gr Barnes Solid First row L to R 250 Barnes X FN, 300 FN, Rem 300 JHP, Barnes 300 Original, Hornady 350 RN Second row L to R SinterFire 300 Frangible, Barnes 300 X FN, Barnes 300 X Spitzer, Speer 400 FN, Barnes 400 RN Solid, 450 RN Third row L to R Hornady 500 RN, Speer 500 AGS-T, Hornady 500 FMJ-Enc, Bridger 500 FN, Barnes 500 RN Solid, Barnes 500 X Spitzer, Barnes 600 Original |

It feeds 10 rounds single stacked from a standard USGI 30 rnd mag. It feeds 7 rounds single stacked from a USGI 20 rnd mag.
