The M4 carbine was introduced in 1988.
It was formally adopted by the Special Operations Command (SOCCOM) in 1994 and by the Army in 1997. |

The M16 is still the standard weapon of
the US Army and Marines. The M4 does seem to be gaining, however.

I recall reading that the Army has nine M16A2 rifles for every M4 carbine in inventory. |
