When I was in, we had the M16A2, but anymore all you see is the M4's.  I served from '86-'92. When did the military start moving towards the M4's ?  It seems to me the move started with the  "War on Terror" in Afgan and Iraq.

The M4 carbine was introduced in 1988.

It was formally adopted  by the Special Operations Command (SOCCOM) in 1994 and by the Army in 1997.

The M16 is still the standard weapon of
the US Army and Marines. The M4 does seem
to be gaining, however.

I recall reading that the Army has nine M16A2 rifles for every M4 carbine in inventory.
